Moses Striking Water from the Rock; Circle of Pietro Dandini, Italian 1646-1712 Italian School, late 17th century oil on canvas, framed framed: 32 x 28 inches canvas: 29 x 23.5 inches Condition: good and sound condition Provenance: private collection, London The present work recalls canvases by Dandini (1646-1712), in its dramatic rendering of the compositional elements in high Baroque style. The artist has adoped start contrasts of light and shade, deep colours and an overall dynamism to achieve a sense of grandeur and awe for his rendering of the Old Testament scene in which Moses, instructed by God, strikes the ground to draw water from the rock, for the Israelites (Exodus, 17).
