About the Item
Proud to present this very fine portrait of a Victorian lady, by the American artist Raul Gutierrez (b.1935). The artist has composed the subject squarely, but at a slight angle, leaning to the left. The sitter has her hair up, in a clean and tidy fashion, wearing a light pink floral blouse with an inner lace collar and brooch.
Gutierrez conveys particular characteristics in his work, with a focus on authentic characters and settings. His artistic method involves subtle layering of tones, building multi-faceted portraits with both emotive expression and an arresting quality. Here, this square composition ensures focus on central facial features, and the angle adds intrigue, setting the subject apart from the mottled background.
Handsomely presented in a square gilt effect frame, with ribbon and floral motif mouldings. Signed to the lower right, and inscribed to the reverse 'To Anthony, my friend', '"Victorian" Dan Kruse, like New Zealand', as well as another artist's signature.
