About the Item
'The Chess Match', oil on cardstock paper, by Raymond Debiève (1973). Rich colours, bold, painterly brush strokes and an unusual subject for a work of art, Debiève has created this scene in his post-cubist style. Picasso's influence is undeniable yet Debiève's own naive artistic style is on display as well.
In good overall condition. Newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Signed by the artist in upper left hand and dated 10th of May 1973 in the lower right. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. A short video clip of this work may be provided upon request.
"Chess is a beautiful game. Like artists painting their worlds within the confines of a canvas, so do chess players build their vision within the square-format of their board. Any art lover will be awed to notice how grandmasters — the best players of chess in the world — will follow similar principles of composition in their strategy that artists use in their art. There’s symmetry, rhythm, an understanding of line and negative space. And just like in all compositions, no element is truly independent, but connected to the whole. The best-placed pieces will attack, threaten, defend and block the opponent’s movement, all at the same time" (Artshaft).

Raymond Debieve
Raymond Debiève (1931-2011), was born, along with his twin brother, Michel, in the North of France near the border with Belgium. Their parents, of humble origins, noted a talent for drawing and art in both of the boys and encouraged them in that direction. Unfortunately the boys were separated during the war years but reunited afterwards. They attended the School of Fine Arts in Valenciennes after WWII where they were awarded successive 1st prizes in the Concours de Encouragement à l'Art. Raymond not only painted but was a gifted sculptor of metal works as well. In 1960 he exhibited, with great success, a series of very colourful paintings at the Galerie des Flandres in Lille, France and later in his career in Paris and Switzerland. Primarily with respect to his portraits of women, Raymond was undeniably influenced by Picasso. At the same time, he has managed to forge a distinct style which is much admired and now collected. In 1962, Debiève relocated to Provence with his family where he continued to create and exhibit art until his death in the town of Orange in 2011. Since then, Debiève's star has been on the rise and his works more and more in demand internationally.

Abstract Composition
By Edgar Stoëbel
Located in London, GB
'Abstract Composition', oil on board (circa 1960s), by Edgar Stoëbel (1909-2001). In his very original style, artist Stoëbel's abstract image seems to form a human torso with the lively colours of a modernist work. The image has a pop art quality to it and was created just as that movement was emerging. Pop art challenged traditional painting by embracing colourful images from advertising, popular culture, comic books and mundane objects from everyday life. This artwork has a powerful intensity of tone and colour having somewhat faded with time. It speaks to Stoëbel's very distinctive style which remains completely approachable and appealing. In fact, this is not pop art. This is part of the post-war concrete abstract movement, or Constructive Art...

"CHECKMATE"
OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED, TITLED
CUBAN-AMERICAN, DATED 2017
53.25 X 41.5 INCHES
"Checkmate" is that great end-finale, that surprised everyone because you basically were playing or getting ready for a totally different game.
An unexpected move from the governments who always have a "card up their sleeve" to screw you.
Yuri Martinez Ramos was born in Havana, Cuba on November 24, 1964.
He studied at the Elemental School of Plastic Arts from 1975 – 1979 and the National School of the Arts from 1979 – 1983.
Martinez’ figurative paintings have been compared to Botero because of his satirical social commentary. His style, however, is uniquely his own with typically vibrant Latin colors and use of expressive magical realism. His paintings tell his story and the story of the Cuban dilemma.
Martinez was granted permission by the US Justice Department after much effort with Cuban authorities to come to the US with his family and pursue his career outside Cuba. He now lives and works in Texas.
