About the Item

Romualdo Locatelli è conosciuto per i suoi ritratti che riflettono le culture e le tradizioni dei luoghi esotici che ha visitato. Born in Bergamo, Italy, in 1905, he traveled and explored various parts of the world until finding death under mysterious circumstances near Manila. The painting in question is emblematic of his interest in different cultures and his ability to represent them with authenticity and respect. The painting in question is emblematic of his interest in different cultures and his ability to represent them with authenticity and respect; it depicts a young Tunisian woman turned three-quarters, who smiles with a sweet and serene expression resting her face on her hand, in a composition carefully designed to impart a sense of movement and vitality to the painting. Mastery of lights and shadows gives depth and realism to the subject while the palette is rich and vibrant to bring out the expressiveness of the face and the details of traditional clothing: the yellow and blue colors, typical of the Gabés area and southern Tunisia, contrasting harmoniously with the olive complexion of his skin, create a color effect that makes the painting visually appealing. It is related to the artist's experiences in North Africa, to which he traveled in 1927, leaving from Gabés in Tunisia, and in the fall of 1930, in both cases in the company of his friend the painter Ernesto Quarti Marchiò. Considerando la scritta Tunisi accanto alla firma si può dedurre che sia stato ispirato dal primo viaggio e quindi si può proporre una datazione alla fine degli anni Venti. The current frame is painted white.
