circa 1927
About the Item
The unframed painting measures 120 x 61 cm.
Romualdo Locatelli è conosciuto per i suoi ritratti che riflettono le culture e le tradizioni dei luoghi esotici che ha visitato. Born in Bergamo, Italy, in 1905, he traveled and explored various parts of the world until finding death under mysterious circumstances near Manila.
The painting in question is emblematic of his interest in different cultures and his ability to represent them with authenticity and respect.
The painting in question is emblematic of his interest in different cultures and his ability to represent them with authenticity and respect; it depicts a boy standing, with an expression between surprised and smiling, holding a baby goat. He wears typical festive clothes, such as the
chechia headdress and jebba robe, while in the background we can see a glimpse of the domed outline of a shrine of the saints (Sidi), so it may have been made during the ʿīd al-aḍḥā, or sacrifice festival, still in vogue in some southern cities of the country.
It is related to the artist's experiences in North Africa, where he traveled in 1927, leaving from Gabés in
Tunisia, and in the fall of 1930, together with his painter friend Ernesto Quarti Marchiò. A painting
almost entirely similar, probably the sketch of ours-noting only a few differences in the choice of palette and background details-in the private collection has in the frame the label of the Bolzani Gallery in Milan, where Locatelli held an exhibition in early 1930. It can therefore be assumed that the execution of the canvas dates back to the first trip to Mediterranean Africa, and a date of the second half of the 1920s is proposed.

Romualdo Locatelli
Romualdo Locatelli studied at the Carrara Academy and then, driven by a strong passion for trips, traveled a lot in Italy and abroad in Africa and Orient. During World War II, he moved to Manila in the Philippines, where he stayed until his death. His works belong to public and private collections all around the world, especially in Orient, where he probably made his better works and is still known as the famous Romualdo. In his natal city, Bergamo dedicated his many exhibitions.

Three Angels
By Domenico Piola the Elder
Located in New York, NY
Provenance:
Robert L. and Bertina Suida Manning, New York, until 1996
Private Collection, USA
One of the leading artists in Genoa during the second half of the seventeenth century, Domenico Piola came from a successful family of artists, renowned for their many illusionistic ceiling programs throughout Genoese churches and palaces. A prolific draughtsman and painter, Domenico oversaw an extremely productive studio. In addition to his collaborations with numerous other artists, Domenico also provided many designs for book illustrations and prints that circulated throughout Europe, earning him international exposure and high acclaim in his own day.
As Dr. Anna Orlando has indicated (written communication), the present work is an early work by Piola, datable from the late 1640s. At this time the young artist came strongly under the influence of Castiglione and Valerio Castello, while admiring the works of Giulio Cesare Procaccini. Piola’s works from this period are exuberant and fluid, and the artist’s love of portraying children is evident from the angels and putti that populate both his altarpieces and more intimate paintings.
The present work depicts three angels...

The present work is a spectacular jewel-like canvas by Amigoni, rich in delicate pastel colors, most likely a modello for an altarpiece either lost or never painted. In it the Madonna stands firmly upon a cloud in the heavens, her Child resting on a delicate veil further supported by a cloud, as he gently wraps his arm around his mother’s neck. From above angels prepare to lower flowers and a wreath, while other angels and seraphim surrounding the two joyfully cavort.
Dr. Annalisa Scarpa, author of the forthcoming monograph on Jacopo Amigoni...
