About the Item

An exquisite late 19th century copy of Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun's self portrait of 1791. Engaged with a warm smile, Le Brun airily sets to work on a portrait of Queen Marie Antoinette (1755–93). The artist depicts herself at the easel, holding a palette in her arm and brushes to hand. Both her subject and her elegant black silk gown evoke the power and prestige of her position as the Queen's official court painter. The scarlet sash is a bold touch to the lower right-hand corner. This stunning oil portrait comes housed in its original pierced acanthus-leaf frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
