About the Item

Tribute to Michelangelo III is a unique painting by contemporary artist Hongyu Zhang. The painting is made with Indian ink, pastel, acrylic, engraving and collage on cardboard mounted on canvas, dimensions are 140 × 100 cm (55.1 × 39.4 in). The artwork is signed, sold framed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The famous Michelangelo sculpture David, on display at the Galleria dell'Academia in Firenze, Italy, was the artist's choice. Hongyu Zhang is fascinated by this sculpture, and he uses engraving and painting, two artistic mediums, to try to "capture its energy" onto a two-dimensional support. The greeting "Salut Michel-Ange" is written repeatedly, as if the Chinese artist were attempting to invoke the Master. Using contrasting mediums like pastels, China ink, charcoal, and acrylics, this figurative piece is a portrait that visually gives the still image a dynamic dimension. On the canvas composition, the artist also used linography, a photographic printing technique on textile that adds contrast by making the dark colours in the portrait stand out against a blue background. Hongyu Zhang’s technique is part of the oldest and richest artistic heritage in the human history. The artist fuses techniques from his ancestors with acrylic, oils and pastels from the West. He works on different mediums placed directly on the floor. The expression, however, is truly from western inspiration, and the influence of engraving is obvious in his paintings.
