Artist Biography:
Richard Twose is an award winning portrait painter and artist, he was awarded first prize for a portrait in 2012 by the Victoria Art Gallery in his home city of Bath and in 2014 his iconic painting of Jean Woods was awarded second prize at the BP Portrait Award at The National Portrait Gallery.
Art critic Ben Luke in the Evening Standard wrote of Richard’s portrait “ Best of all is the second prize work, Richard Twose’s painting of Jean Woods, an elegant fashion model from Bath, interrupted by elements of colourful abstraction. It reminds me of the painter Howard Hodgkin’s description of Degas’s great portrait of Helene Rouart in the National Gallery - that it has that glancing, slightly dematerialised quality that one really does see in reality”
The artist Jonathan Yeo chose Richard as the subject of the CNN Arts documentary “Ones to Watch” in 2014 and Richard also appeared in the Exhibitions on Screen (nationwide release) film “Rembrandt - The Late Works based on the National Gallery’s recent Rembrandt Exhibition.
Richard has just completed a residency at the Royal College of Art with the NOA organisation and portrait commissions in 2015 include Alice Prochaska - Principal of Somerville College, Oxford and Viscountess Rosie Grimston. Most recently his paintings have been shown at the Mall Galleries - ING Discerning Eye, the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath and the RWA. He is also a tutor in painting and portraiture at the National Portrait Gallery.
Projects for 2016 include two solo shows one at Wychwood Art Gallery in Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire and a third in discussion in New York. In September 2016 a 2m2 painting by Richard will be on show at Canary Wharf Tower, London.
