Contemporary Mixed Media Painting on Wood Panel, Acrylic Paint, Canvas Strips
Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1968, Ronald Johnson received an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003. Since then, Johnson has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally, as well as being a resident at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming in 2004 and at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, France in 2002. Johnson uses strategically placed canvas strips to act as dam walls to corral the poured paint and polyurethane mix. Each layer must be sanded vigorously to ensure as much precision as possible. The sanding process gives the surface a unique sheen, while simultaneously transparent and opaque, reminiscent of encaustic. Through Johnson’s process, the layers become diffused and viscously permeable, with crisp edges and a traceable lost-and-found history.
