Ross Eugene Braught
Transcendence

1942

About the Item

Measurements Painting 81.125 x 58.25 inches Framed 87.5 x 64.375 inches This painting, Transcendence (1942) by Ross Braught, exudes a spiritual and ethereal quality. The composition is filled with radiant light bursting through the clouds, suggesting a divine presence or an ascent into a higher plane of existence. The soft, atmospheric blending of colors, combined with geometric shards of light, creates a mystical and almost surreal effect. The presence of lush green foliage in the foreground grounds the composition in nature, contrasting the celestial realm above. One of the artist’s largest and most monumental of his oeuvre, Transcendence is a deeply symbolic painting that blends elements of surrealism, transcendentalism, and luminism. The artwork radiates with an ethereal glow, suggesting a connection between the earthly and the divine, or the material and the spiritual. The central figure, seemingly formed from light and clouds, evokes themes of ascension, spiritual awakening, or even divine revelation. The strong use of beams of light suggests enlightenment, inspiration, or an unseen higher power. The rainbow in the upper right corner can be interpreted as a biblical or spiritual symbol of promise and transformation. The foreground, with its lush green plants, contrasts with the abstract light-filled sky. This contrast might symbolize the tension between earthly existence and transcendence, with nature anchoring the viewer in reality while the radiant figure draws attention to something beyond. Braught’s style in Transcendence reflects a fusion of several artistic movements: Luminism: The intense use of light and atmosphere to create a sense of the sublime. Symbolism: The blending of natural and abstract elements to evoke deeper spiritual or philosophical meanings. Surrealism: The dreamlike quality of the figure and its surroundings, creating a sense of mysticism. Braught’s work in general often explores themes of nature, spirituality, and abstraction, and Transcendence embodies these ideas beautifully. Braught’s works are in many museum and private collections worldwide. The recent publication “Ross Braught: Man of Imagination” by Roland Sabates is included with the purchase of this painting. The painting retains a hand made wood frame covered in white gold.

Moonlight Along the Coast
Located in Spokane, WA
Measures Painting 20 x 25 inches Framed 24 x 39 inches (approximately) This luminist and atmospheric evening seascape by Granville Redmond (1871 - 1935) was painted on Catalina Island off the California coast c.1920. Redmond was a very prominent California Impressionist known for his serene tranquil and mood-filled California coastal paintings bathed in moonlight with waves gently rolling onto the shore. As a deaf mute, he explained that without speech and hearing, his abilities to see things in a detailed and poetic way were much more honed and enhanced. He was renowned for his Impressionist landscapes, particularly those featuring California wildflowers, coastal scenes, and tonal moonlit settings. Despite his deafness from a young age, Redmond achieved significant acclaim for his art and even acted in silent films, becoming friends with Charlie Chaplin, who built an art studio for him on his large movie lot. Redmond lost his hearing due to scarlet fever as a child and later attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, where his artistic talents were nurtured. He studied at the California School of Design in San Francisco before continuing his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian. He became a highly respected landscape painter, shifting between vibrant Impressionist poppy...
