Macaws at the Mission

c. 1920

About the Item

Measures Painting 40 x 40 inches Framed 50.375 x 50.375 inches Winthrop Stark Davis (1885–1950) was an American painter known for his decorative and illustrative style, often incorporating vibrant colors and bold compositions. His works frequently depicted exotic birds, floral arrangements, and stylized nature scenes, blending elements of realism with an expressive use of color. He was active in the early-to-mid 20th century and contributed to both fine and commercial art. This magnificent example features two striking parrots—one a scarlet macaw and the other a blue-and-yellow macaw—perched around a richly decorated floral arrangement in a classical urn. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Davis spent a significant portion of his career in Chicago, Illinois, where he was affiliated with several art institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Palette and Chisel Club. Later in life, he relocated to California, working for Disney Animation Studios in Los Angeles and Burbank. Davis's artistic oeuvre is characterized by colorful and stylized representations of birds, often set against lush, natural backdrops. His works have been featured in various exhibitions and continue to be sought after by collectors. In addition to his fine art, Davis contributed to commercial art, notably creating a series of advertisements for Lincoln automobiles in the late 1920s, which featured exotic birds alongside the vehicles. This large and stunning work showcases two macaws amidst a richly decorated floral arrangement. This magnificent composition exemplifies his ability to blend vibrant wildlife imagery with decorative elements, reflecting the Art Deco influences prevalent during his active years. Davis's works remain a testament to his keen eye for color and form, capturing the beauty of wildlife through a stylized lens that continues to resonate with art enthusiasts today. A stunning and important work in an extraordinary carved wood frame covered in 23K gold accompanies this painting.
