"Still Life with Roses and Fruit" Impressionist Oil of Canvasboard Painting
Located in New York, NY
A whimsical depiction by Martha Walter of an interior morning scene of white and pink roses arrangement in a glass vase on top of a table, and fruit on a decorated plate. In the background, the window overlooking the backyard, with the use of bold colors and strong contrasts makes Walter's work so striking and captivating. The flowers are executed with bold petals and exciting colors and this depiction is a wonderful scene done in her home. As an acclaimed American Impressionist painter and one of the premier female artists to be recognized within the fine arts community of the time, she was known for her bright plein-air beach scenes and domestic portraits. Martha Walter studied under William Merritt Chase and was greatly influenced by the then-established French Impressionists Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, and Eugène Boudin. Walter's works took on a looser style; she also used black paint, a color often excluded by other Impressionists. The painting is on canvasboard with the Martha Walter Estate stamp on the reverse, and it comes housed in an antiqued champagne color...

Subtlety in Pink
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Maryann Lucas lives and works in Sag Harbor. She is primarily self-taught but has also received instruction and support from wonderful and generous members of the East End artistic community. Working exclusively in oils, Lucas sets out almost daily to create plein aire landscapes and seascapes. In her studio, she works directly from life and captures the beauty of natural light as it transforms ordinary objects into visual delights. Lucas wants her work to celebrate all that is well with this world and brilliant in this life, despite its pockets of darkness. For me, she says, I know I am in the Presence of something beautiful, when it steals my breath, silences my mind, pushes out everything else and draws me in. I trust That. I use That to guide my hands as I arrange a still life or scan a landscape to determine where to set down my easel. Ultimately, That is what drives me to paint. Becoming evermore skilled as an oil painter is another of Lucas goals. To that end she remains teachable, finding it refreshing and vital for her own growth to paint with others. She has studied with favorite artists including Michael Klein...

"Lilacs, " Still-Life Oil Painting
Located in Westport, CT
This still life oil painting by John Traynor captures a scene of a large bouquet of purple and pink lilacs in a colorful, porcelain vase. It sits on an off-white fabric next to a lemon which is half peeled, the peel spiraling off the edge of the table on which it sits. The wall behind the bouquet of flowers is a warm, earthy sienna. The painting is signed by the artist along the lower right-hand edge of the canvas. It is 20" x 24", and 27" x 31" framed. The frame is an ornate metal-leaf frame with a linen liner. It is wired and ready to hang. Professionally framed in classic, antiqued, closed corner frame. Frame is metal leaf gold. John C. Traynor's painting style is reminiscent of some 19th century painters and the Dutch Masters. He uses his knowledge of light and color to create a certain mood in each of his works. The creation of atmosphere is an important element in Traynor's paintings. Painting outdoors, on location, is a prime source of inspiration and ideas for his landscapes. John travels extensively, painting the landscapes around him. John was born in 1961 and spent his early years in Chester and Mendham, New Jersey. His art studies began at Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, and from there he furthered his education at Paier College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. He studied figure painting at the Art Students League of New York, as a merit scholar, with Frank Mason. Traynor continued his studies in Vermont with Mr. Mason on landscape painting, drawing with Carroll N. Jones Jr. of Stowe, Vermont and sculpture with Brother Jerome Cox...

Four Vases of Flowers
By Laura Van Pappelendam
Located in Milford, NH
A beautifully executed floral still life oil painting by American artist and educator Laura van Pappelendam (1883-1974). Pappelendam was born in Donnelson, Iowa, studied from 1904-1909 at the School of the Art Institute, continuing with classes until she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in art education in 1926. Pappelendam gained a doctorate in 1929 from the University of Chicago, where she helped establish both the Department of Art in 1924 and the Renaissance Club, and then taught in the University Department of Art part time from 1919 to 1948, overlapping with the Art Institute where she taught for fifty years, from 1909-1959. Amazingly for all of the energy she devoted to teaching, she is equally and perhaps best remembered as an oil painter, whose subjects included Southwest landscapes and scenes from Florence, Arizona. She won numerous awards and had her work included in 250 art exhibitions both here and abroad. Oil on canvas, unsigned, titled on verso Fenn Galleries (Santa Fe, NM) and Owings-Dewey Fine Arts Gallery (Santa Fe, NM) label “Four Vases...

Still Life with Cat
By Humbert Howard
Located in Milford, NH
A colorful impressionist still life painting with fruit and a cat on a table by American artist Humbert Howard (1905-1990). Howard was born in Philadelphia and considered an important figure among contemporary African-American artists. He was educated at Howard University in Washington, D.C., the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania. Howard was also art director of the Pyramid Club, a respected black cultural center in Philadelphia. As director of the club’s art exhibitions, he selected works by both black and white artists for display. By the time he retired in 1971, he had developed a loyal following of collectors and dealers in the Philadelphia area. In the eighties, he became increasingly involved with younger members of the local art scene and became a mentor to emerging black artists. Often called the “dean of Philadelphia’s black artists,” Howard hosted meetings of the local chapter of the National Conference of Black Artists in his Hamilton Street living room. Howard's paintings are part of the permanent collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art, the Museum of the Philadelphia Civic Center and the Philadelphia Afro-American Museum. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 69 upper left, titled inscribed on verso partial attached label “Still Life with Cat...

Still-life paintings work as part of the decor in nearly every type of space.

Still-life art, which includes work produced in media such as painting, photography, video and more, is a popular genre in Western art. However, the depiction of still life in color goes back to Ancient Egypt, where paintings on the interior walls of tombs portrayed the objects — such as food — that a person would take into the afterlife. Ancient Greek and Roman mosaics and pottery also often depicted food. Indeed, still-life paintings frequently feature food, flowers or man-made objects. By definition, still-life art represents anything that is considered inanimate.

During the Middle Ages, the still life genre was adapted by artists who illustrated religious manuscripts. A common theme of these paintings is the reminder that life is fleeting. This is especially true of vanitas, a kind of still life with roots in the Netherlands during the 17th century, which was built on themes such as death and decay and featured skulls and objects such as rotten fruit. In northern Europe during the 1600s, painters consulted botanical texts to accurately depict the flowers and plants that were the subject of their work.

Leonardo da Vinci’s penchant for observing phenomena in nature and filling notebooks with drawings and notes helped him improve as an artist of still-life paintings. Vincent van Gogh, an artist who made a couple of the most expensive paintings ever sold, carried out rich experiments with color over the course of painting hundreds of still lifes, and we can argue that Campbell’s Soup Cans (1961–62) by Andy Warhol counts as still-life art.

While early examples were primarily figurative, you can find still lifes that belong to different schools and styles of painting, such as Cubism, Impressionism and contemporary art.

As part of the wall decor in your living room, dining room or elsewhere, a still-life painting can look sophisticated alongside your well-curated decorative objects and can help set the mood in a space.

When shopping for a still-life painting, think about how it makes you feel and how the artist chose to represent its subject. When buying any art for your home, choose pieces that you connect with. If you’re shopping online, read the description of the work to learn about the artist and check the price and shipping information. Make sure that the works you choose complement or relate to your overall theme and furniture style. Artwork can either fit into your room’s color scheme or serve as an accent piece. Introduce new textures to a space by choosing an oil still-life painting.

On 1stDibs, find a collection of still-life paintings in a wide range of styles and subject matter.
