About the Item
This still life of Plums is a top notch example of 19th century still life painting! Beautiful quality and striking but also spare and honest in nature which is what typified American art at this early time.American still life painting is a fascinating and rare subject. In comparison to European still lifes, Americans exhibited a sparer, humble style and though tables overflowing with fruits, fish, and flowers were not a favorite amongst Americans, Lehr excelled at the genre. Lehr forgoes an English title with this painting, channeling his European counterparts, and opts for the French Les Gros Prunes (Big Plums). This particular painting can be compared to the works of Levi Wells Prentice, who commonly painted various fruits spilling forth from a container. It was a way to paint a large group of fruit in an informal and out-of-doors setting. Lehr has done it beautifully, capturing the texture of the plums in a realistic manner.

Fannie Burr was a highly accomplished painter and one of our earlier American women artists! This very contemporary, fresh and appealing floral study was done circa 1895!! The rarity of this and its virtuoso execution could lend it to being in the collection of a Connecticut museum. Along with her sister Jennie, they were known as the "Burr Sisters". They did focus on paintings of still life and nature which would have been acceptable for a female artist of the period. Fannie studied at the Yale School of Art and then the Art Students League in New York. She was assistant to Julian Alden Weir a major CT impressionist, while he was at Yale teaching.
The composition is avant-hard for this date! It is in an exceptional hand carved 22 karat frame of high value, Art Nouveau style.
In the estate of 700 or so paintings by Fannie and Jenny Burr it was found that they did not sign most of the paintings. They were not selling their works or represented so much so this is understandable. This has a great provenance!

Mimi Jensen uses bold colors to depict theatrically lit objects. Her paintings invite speculation into possible metaphors – California Home+Design magazine
Ms. Jensen is a Still Life painter who is inspired by her ideas and observations. Jensen’s education and early work experience were eclectic – Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Speech Therapist, Technical Editor, and even an Airline Analyst to satisfy her desire to travel. Eventually she returned to graduate school to follow her dream of studying art. While still a graduate student in drawing and painting she was selected for her first commercial gallery show, which led to subsequent exhibitions and launched her professional career as a painter. She has exhibited widely in the U.S., has been featured in numerous publications – American Art Collector, California Home+Design, Fine Art Today, Professional Artist, Southwest Art, The Artist’s Magazine – and for the past 20 years she has been represented by galleries in San Francisco, Boston, Santa Fe, and other cities.
