Albert Naur'Still Life of Roses on a Tea Table', Paris, Academie de la Palette, BenezitCirca 1955
Circa 1955
About the Item
Signed lower right, 'A. Naur' for Albert Naur (Danish, 1889-1973) and painted circa 1955.
A cheerful, mid-century oil showing a pair of leisure chairs with ruffled throw pillows beside a polished tea table carrying fresh garden flowers.
Albert Naur first studied Philosophy and Law in Copenhagen (1908-1911) while painting in a naturalist style. Deciding to focus on his work as an artist, he moved to Paris in 1912. During his first visit, he remained there for two years and studied at the Academie de la Palette under Fauconnier and Dunoyer de Segonzac. He was initially influenced by Cubism but soon relaxed into a linear form of Post-Impressionism. Over the course of the next decade, Naur was the recipient numerous scholarships including the prestigious Hielmstierne-Rosencrone Prize (1915) and the Akadamie Scholarship which he was awarded four times, (1916, 1920, 1922, 1924). While living and painting in Denmark, he continued to visit Paris (1919, 1922), where his palette brightened and his brushwork continued to become looser as he was exposed to the Modernist developments of the early 1920's. Over the course of a long and successful career, he exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards including a silver medal in Paris (1925). Albert Naur is listed in all relevant art reference works including Thieme-Becker and Benezit's definitive dictionary of artists.

- 'Roses with a Quimper Plate', Paris, Salon d’Automne, Fauve, Section d'OrBy Jais NielsenLocated in Santa Cruz, CASigned lower right 'Jais' for Jais Nielsen (Danish, 1885-1961) and dated 1913. An early twentieth-century, oil still-life of pink dog-roses shown loosely arranged in a cobalt blue glass vase, set beside two Breton tin-glazed earthenware plates, resting on an azure-turquoise tablecloth and contrasted against a coral-ochre background. An elegant, early work by this foundational Danish Modernist. Born in Denmark, Jais Nielsen initially studied at Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler under Kristian Zahrtmann and exhibited for the first time at the 1907 Autumn Salon at the Charlottenborg Palace. Nielsen participated in the early and groundbreaking, “Group of Thirteen" Modernist show, where his focus on dynamic figural painting and his bold use of color set him dramatically apart from his contemporaries. From 1907-11, Nielsen's use of 'primitive' Fauve colors would continue to reinforce his break with traditional Danish painting. During this period, he made study excursions to important art centres, including, in 1909, to Berlin. In 1911, he moved to Paris where he settled in the Latin Quarter near the Musée Cluny. His first formal Paris exhibition was at the Salon d’Automne of 1912. During this first Paris period, Nielsen attended meetings of the Section d’Or at the studio of Jacques Villon and, as a result, began to incorporate subtle, yet distinct, Cubist elements into his work. With the outbreak of World War One, Nielsen returned to Copenhagen, taking with him both his increasing compositional sophistication and a thorough understanding of the principles of Modernism. During this period, ports, dance and circus life became subjects of interest and he painted many canvases in the style of Analytic Cubism, of which he became the earliest and, arguably, the finest Danish exponent. From 1915 onwards, Nielsen also created Cubist sculptures and, from 1922-28, was employed as a sculptor by the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory. Here, he produced a series of ceramic sculptures on Biblical themes which included the Good Samaritan and several versions of Jacob Wrestling with the Angel...Category

- 'Still Life of Daffodils', Paris Modernist, Royal Danish Academy, CharlottenborgBy Viggo RorupLocated in Santa Cruz, CASigned lower right, 'V. Rorup' for Viggo Julius Rorup (Danish, 1903-1971) and dated 1963. Exhibited: 'Copenhagen Art Association Exhibition, 1964', from exhibition stamp, verso, on stretcher bar. A substantial and vibrant Post-Impressionist still-life showing a profusion of fresh-cut daffodils informally arranged in a jade-green vase and set on a table in a sitting-room. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they founded the avante-garde group of artists named The Corner, which first introduced the principles of European Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and, most importantly, to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a great stylistic impact on his later work. As Rorup continued to paint in the south of France, his palette grew brighter and the earlier, more defined, contours of his forms became subsumed into scintillating nuances of light. We are pleased to offer this elegant and dazzling still-life from the artist's late period.
