About the Item

Alex Amann’s oeuvre contains a variety of genres, which are, however, well-coordinated through their design. He devotes himself to still life as well as to landscape painting and figural compositions. Nevertheless, his works are connected by the play of light and shadow, the intense mood conveyed by the strong colours. The atmosphere that comes to light in the paintings is created by the strong contrasts that the artist uses. The artist’s style is oriented towards the representational work. It is important to Amann to give the viewer a certain amount of freedom, which gives them the opportunity to interpret the paintings individually. Most of the artist’s works are created directly in front of the motif, i.e. plein air painting. As a result, Amann’s works are subordinate to a process of time and materiality. For the perfect light in his landscapes, the painter accepts long waiting times. But still lifes and figural compositions are also subject to a constant process of revision. If the composition requires it, canvases or panels are often extended by additions and overpaintings are not uncommon either. One of the most avid collectors of Alex Amann’s works was the famous collector Rudolf Leopold, who acquired over 70 works by Alex Amann and supported the artist in every way. Exhibitions: Numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, including in Paris, Vienna, Nice, Salzburg and Klagenfurt.

'Schlüsselloch' by Fides Becker Acrylic and Eggtempera on Canvas, 33 x 54 cm, 2017 The leading theme of the artist’s interventions is the staging of temporality, transience, and change. Fides Becker (* 1962) developed and pursued her picturesque strategies in the illusionistic pictorial space. Her practice explores intimate worlds through objects and materials we associate with the private sphere in everyday life. Sofas, beds, curtains, mirrors, and sheets are reconstituted in her paintings as fragments, details or dissolving surfaces that engage with the ambiguities between presence and absence, past and present, and personal and collective images. Fides Becker (*1962 in Worms) studied at the Städel School in Frankfurt a.M., at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam, and at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Her works can be found in numerous national and international collections, such as the National Collection of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Art Collection of the German Bank...

#452
By Tiffany Calvert
Located in New Orleans, LA
Calvert’s current paintings investigate the relationship between digital media and the reception and perception of images, and utilizes diverse technologies such as fresco, 3D modeling, AI and data manipulation through code. She is especially interested in the evolution of pictorial space. Today we view our screens and the world they occupy as a shallowly layered space of overlapping desktop windows. The picture plane has tilted up again from the flatbed to float in front of our eyes. Calvert’s paintings in turn depict an intermediate space, where the verticality of the still life paintings cohabitate with these digital panes. Dutch floral still life paintings encapsulate multiple concerns. Their subjects were botanical fantasies, emblems of an economic mirage that has contemporary corollaries. Most important to Calvert’s pictorial concerns, they depict ephemeral things in shallow and diagrammatic space - they are all foreground. They contain an abundance of visual information in overwhelming density, creating an allover resolution; a visual field that is equivalent to digital noise. By making painterly interventions into reproductions, Calvert attempts to dissolve the layer between the resolution of the source image and abstraction of the painted mark. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ Tiffany Calvert has exhibited her work in the US and abroad including Lawrimore Project in Seattle, E.TAY Gallery in New York, the Speed Museum in Louisville and Cadogan Contemporary in London. Residencies include the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, I-Park, and ArtOmi International Arts Center where she received a Geraldine R. Dodge Fellowship. Calvert has received grants from the Great Meadows Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Her work was recently profiled by critic John Yau in the online journal Hyperallergic. Her curatorial projects include “Some Abstraction Occurs” at 65GRAND Gallery in Chicago and “Magic” at Mercer College (featuring work by Chris Martin, Karla Knight...
