About the Item
Brad Overton creates large scale paintings of toy figurines; he brings these objects to life by placing them in unique and fantastical settings. "I have always loved the patina of old toys, wagons, cars. I love the look of time and timelessness. A thing never becomes really beautiful until it is washed by use and attention. It is its usefulness and attractive design that encourages interest and preservation. People will hold on to things that are good at bringing them joy.
These paintings are made first, by looking very closely at each subject and responding to its expressive form, its vitality and graceful design, then, painting accurate yet spontaneous layers of color and value until completion. The very small toys, (often only two inches high), on which I based these relatively large paintings, were designed to inspire and bring joy to the child who owned them. And yet, beyond mere sentimentality, I want to inspire viewers by simply looking closely at the many beautiful aspects of these toys and paint them, larger than life, to relate my joy in life, in art."

Aaron Bohrod's work has not been limited to one style or medium. Initially recognized as a regionalist painter of American scenes, particularly of his native Chicago, Bohrod later devoted himself to detailed still-life paintings rendered in the trompe l'oeil style. He also worked for several years in ceramics and wrote a book on pottery.
Born in 1907, Bohrod began his studies at Chicago's Crane Junior College in 1925, and two years later enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. But it was at the Art Students League in New York City, from 1930 to 1932, that he studied under the man believed to be his most significant early influence, John Sloan. Sloan's romantic realism is reflected in the many depictions of Chicago life...
