About the Item
Frank Chabry (also spelled Franck Chabry) (1916–1979) was a Swiss painter and art educator born in Lausanne on April 25, 1916, and passed away in Geneva on July 29, 1979. He was the son of a French father and a Swiss mother. After spending part of his childhood in Paris, he moved to Geneva in 1930 with his mother following their parents’ divorce.
Chabry studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the École des Arts Industriels in Geneva from 1930 to 1932. Between 1932 and 1948, he worked in advertising before obtaining a Swiss federal scholarship that allowed him to continue his artistic education in Paris. There, he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Julian, studying under well-known instructors such as Planson, Lestrille, and Mac’Avoy.
In 1961, Chabry became a professor of Decorative Arts at the Geneva School of Arts, a position he held until his death in 1979. Throughout his career, he exhibited his work in numerous solo and group shows, including in Geneva (Galerie Moos, Galerie Motte), Paris (Salon d’Art Libre, Salon des Artistes Français, Salon d’Automne), and international venues such as the Swiss National Exhibition and the Exposition Internationale in Paris.
Chabry was known for his vibrant still lifes, portraits, symbolic compositions, and floral paintings. His work often featured vivid colors influenced by Fauvism, and at times geometric elements reminiscent of Cubism. Several public institutions in Switzerland hold his artworks, including the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva and the Commune of Cologny.
He received multiple honors during his lifetime, including a Swiss Federal Scholarship (1948), the First Prize of Le Calame in Geneva, and a membership at the Salon d’Automne in Paris (1977). He was also awarded at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1976.

Frank Chabry (1916-1979) was a 20th-century artist whose career spanned several transformative decades in the art world. His work likely reflects the artistic evolution of the mid-20th century, influenced by movements such as modernism and post-war abstraction. Chabry's art may have incorporated themes of everyday life, nature, or abstract forms, characteristic of the period's experimentation with new techniques and perspectives. Though not widely known, his contributions hold value among collectors and art enthusiasts interested in mid-century works, and his pieces occasionally appear in exhibitions or auctions dedicated to this era.
