Fred Hall
Early Twentieth Century Newlyn School Still Life of Flowers in Vase Oil Painting

20th century

About the Item

Early Twentieth Century Newlyn School Still Life of Roses in a Vase Oil Painting. Fred Hall was an English Impressionist Painter of Landscapes, Rustic Subject and Portraits who exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. He was an important member of the Newlyn School in Cornwall and is notable both for his series of witty caricatures of his fellow Newlyn artists and also his artistic development beyond the confines of the rather strict realism of the Newlyn School and more into the field of Impressionism. This painting has been described as a "tour de force" referencing the great dutch masters of the 17th century (Chardin), the masterful display of technical virtuosity has been brought up to date using more Impressionist techniques. This painting evokes the Pont Aven School with it's simplistic background and also has shades of the brilliant Painter John Singer Sargent. Fred Hall 1860 - 1948 Frederick Hall, more commonly known as Fred Hall was born at Stillington in Yorkshire in 1860. He studied at the Lincoln School of Art from 1879, before moving on to study under Charles Verlat (1824-1890) in Antwerp at Verlats prestigious Academy . Fred Hall was known for his impressionist landscapes often with animals. In 1888 he became a member of the Newlyn School in Cornwall living at Faugan House, Faugan Lane in Newlyn, joining fellow ex-Lincoln School of Art student, Frank Bramley (1857-1915), where he remained until 1898 and is notable for both his series of witty caricatures of his fellow Newlyn artists, including Frank Bramley, Stanhope Forbes (1857-1947), and Norman Garstin (1847-1926), and his artistic development away from the strict realism of the Newlyn School towards impressionism. Hall exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1886 onward and at the Paris Salon, winning gold there in 1912 also exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists on Suffolk Street, London, the Grosvenor Gallery, the New Gallery, and the New English Art Club. Works by Fred Hall are in numerous public collections including the Penlee House Gallery in Cornwall, Birmingham City Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery and Bristol City Art Gallery to name but a few.
