About the Item

This is a signed, original, mid-century modern abstract landscape oil painting with white flowers (roses) in an Henri Matisse / Pablo Picasso aesthetic by listed WPA artist, G. Ralph Smith. It is in excellent condition, framed in a modern wooden frame measuring 29” x 23”, and ready to hang. The painting itself measures 24" x 18". It comes from the artist's estate with estate stamp on the back. Smith demonstrates a fine handling of paint in this work – make sure to look at detail photos to get a sense of his elegant, bold brushwork. It is a fine example of Cubism-inspired American Modernism, created in the tradition of Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe, Oscar Bluemner, and Arthur Dove, in the vein of Pablo Picasso. Predominantly teal green blue with accents of gray, red, violet, and white. G. Ralph Smith was a painter, illustrator and lithographer. He is perhaps best known for his regionalist lithographs from the 1930s and '40s, but devoted most of his life to producing oil paintings. Born in Circleville, OH, Smith graduated from the Columbus Art School in 1929 and went on to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1937, he was awarded the Cresson Traveling Fellowship, which allowed him to travel through Europe for several months pursuing his art. In 1939 he married fellow PAFA graduate, Elizabeth Brehm Matos and settled in the Germantown section of Philadelphia where he would remain for the rest of his life. In the late 1930’s Smith collaborated with the German lithographer Theodore Cuno, known for his work with Joseph Pennell and Benton Spruance. They produced a series of twelve lithographs that typify the spirit of Philadelphia Regionalism during the Great Depression. Many of Smith’s paintings were inspired by trips to Rockport, MA from the late 1940’s to the late 1960’s as well as to Southern Maine and the picturesque Manayunk and Wissahickon areas of Philadelphia. On these trips he crafted boldly colored seascapes and landscapes. Smith’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions and can be found in the permanent collections of the Columbus Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Woodmere Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Art.

Vibrant Floral Still Life Painting in the Modernist Style
By Donald Roy Purdy
Located in Surfside, FL
DIMENSIONS: (With Frame) H:36" L:29 7/8" (Without Frame) H:29.5" L:23 3/8" Donald Roy Purdy is an American painter whose work evolved through a range of styles and subjects over the course of his long career. Born in 1924, the self-taught artist seldom used models. Rather, Purdy worked largely from the memory and impressions certain subjects and objects left upon his mind. The artist only occasionally paints on canvas, preferring masonite which he considers to be a stronger and longer-lasting material. Though he admits to using gesso, Purdy is known for his special preparations of painting surfaces through a method he keeps secret. Purdy first began painting in an abstract style. He later combined the abstract techniques with representational subject matter, and would continue experimenting with new styles. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Purdy became influenced by the palette of the Barbizon painters and developed a unique approach, melding abstraction with the rigid Realist techniques to produce his signature Impressionist style. Before pursuing a career as an artist, Purdy earned a B.A. from the University of Connecticut and an M.A. in Psychology from Boston University. Two Purdy paintings were included in the US State Department's "Art in America" show which recently toured Europe and several "First Awards" have been given to Purdy in competition with major artists. Among these is the Gold Metal of Honor from the National Academy in New York City. Purdy's pieces are exhibited by the noted Van Diemen-Lilienfeld Gallery, which shows his work alongside the works of Vlaminch, Derain, Pissaro, Monet, Chagall and Picasso. His one man exhibitions have been seen in New York at the Ruth...
