Il Mercato a Piazza del Popolo è opera del pittore olandese Jacob van Huchtenburgh, nato a Haarlem e presente, nel corso dei primi anni Sessanta del Seicento, a Roma, a stretto contatto con gli artisti suoi connazionali che avevano scelto la scena di genere ambientata, per lo più, nelle strade della città, la cosiddetta “bambocciata”, quale soggetto dei loro dipinti.

La singolare veduta della piazza è presa dalla antica Strada Paolina, l’attuale via del Babuino, sulla destra si vedono il lungo muro di cinta e uno dei due portali d’ingresso dell’Orto dei Padri Agostiniani di Santa Maria del Popolo che si stendeva sulle pendici del Pincio. La piazza è raffigurata così com’era prima della sistemazione attuale, quella di Giuseppe Valadier realizzata tra la fine del Settecento e i primi anni del secolo successivo. Sulla estrema destra la chiesa di Santa Maria del Popolo. In fondo la Porta Flaminia, detta più tardi Porta del Popolo, l’ingresso a Roma dalla via Flaminia. Nella parte alta il fastigio chigiano che ricorda i lavori commissionati dal papa Alessandro VII Chigi (1655-1667) a Gian Lorenzo Bernini in occasione e in onore dell’arrivo a Roma della regina abdicataria, Cristina di Svezia (Stoccolma 1626-Roma 1689), figlia di Gustavo Adolfo, il 23 dicembre 1655. Al centro della piazza l’obelisco di Seti I, ivi eretto da Domenico Fontana nel 1589 per volontà di Sisto V (1585-1590) e, accanto, sulla sinistra, la fontana, progettata da Giacomo della Porta, che Gregorio XIII (1572-1585) fece sistemare in mezzo alla piazza, ancor prima della collocazione dell’obelisco, e che oggi si trova in piazza Nicosia.
Sulla sinistra, in alto, s’intravede la sagoma, piuttosto semplificata, di una villa, probabilmente quella cinquecentesca, progettata da Raffaello, Villa Madama, situata sulle pendici di Monte Mario. Tutto il primo piano del dipinto è occupato dalle grandi figure di mercanti intenti a vendere i loro prodotti, dalle figure di frati e mendicanti, intenti questi ultimi a chiedere l’elemosina, dai bambini presi dai loro giochi e dagli animali, mucche e vitelli, portati lì per essere venduti. L’edificio sulla sinistra e la fontana ad esso addossata sono frutto dell’invenzione dell’artista: aprono la scena sulla sinistra e creano un equilibrio con la parte destra della composizione chiusa dal muro di cinta dell’Orto dei Padri Agostiniani.
