About the Item
This oil on board is by James McCracken (1875-1967). It is a lush, exotic composition, depicting a Buddha statue atop a lotus flower. There are other flowers in the background as well as some kind of aloe or other succulent plant. It has been said of McCracken's work that it is, "highly stylized technique of flat, linear compositions and rich, pastel colors." This work is an excellent example of that description of his most well-known style. It measures 27.25”x23.5” (33”x29.25” framed). It is composed of oil on Masonite and signed in the lower left. The frame goes beautifully with the painting. It is a dark wood with lighter highlights and it has gentle scalloping which mimics the shapes of the aloe in the painting. The whole package has somewhat of a tropical/deco aesthetic. Because of the style, I would estimate it was done in the late 1940s or 1950s. The painting is in good condition. The frame is in fair to good condition, with a small bit of separation in the corners. Please look at the photographs.
McCracken was born in Pundland, Scotland in 1875 and as a young man emigrated to the United States, there he settled in a suburb of Chicago, Oak Park. As a successful painter and illustrator, he kept studios and exhibited in New York and Miami. He is best known for his pastoral landscapes and tropical scenes. McCracken was a successful illustrator, contributing cover work to national magazines and illustrations for children's books, newspapers and railroad posters. McCracken painted in Iowa with Marvin Cone and Grant Wood, and also in Chicago. His subjects included regionalist landscape paintings and exotic birds, executed in a Art Deco inspired style, similar to Jessie Arms Botke. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and worked as an illustrator.

Monoprint of a Lotus
By Gary Bukovnik
Located in San Francisco, CA
This beautiful monoprint by the noted San Francisco artist Gary Bukovnik (1947-) has a wonderful energy borne of bright colors and bold gestures. It is a beautiful abstract composition, improvisational, yet balanced and harmonious. The work measures 23.5”x9.75” the image, 29.5”x15.5 the sheet and 32.75”x18.75” framed. The print is signed and dated in the lower margin, “Gary Bukovnik 1987”. The print is mounted and floating on a linen backing, framed in a bleached wood frame and protected by Plexiglas. It is in excellent condition. The frame and Plexiglas are in fair-to good condition, with a small stain on the top of the top bar of the frame which I have shown in the final photograph, as well as a few very light scratches in the Plexiglas. This exceptional art would look beautiful in a variety of settings – home or office.
Born and educated in Cleveland, Gary Bukovnik has lived in San Francisco for more than a third of a century. Primarily using the media of watercolor, monotype, and lithograph, Bukovnik fuses sensual vitality with fluid yet powerful colorations, creating floral and culinary images of great depth, intensity, and size.
In 2003 and 2005, invited Bukovnik was Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome in 2003 and 2005 and was an artist-in-residence at the Michigan Institute of Arts in Kalamazoo in 2010, as well as making a tour of exhibitions and watercolor demonstrations across Japan in 2010.

Artist Comments
In the style of contemporary realism, artist Guigen Zha paints a porcelain vase of Buddha's head. A bouquet of blue lotus flowers blooms in the oriental still life. Succulent dew drops glaze the delicate petals. Guigen conveys the message of hope and peace for good in life.
