The joy in my work starts with the set up. I may spend a great deal of time arranging and rearranging the composition, while experimenting with different lighting positions until it feels right. The next step is a detailed drawing of my still life set up on a gessoed panel. I then apply a thinned out oil paint which establishes the color and value pattern and provides a basis for the textures I’m seeking. I’m now ready to begin the details. I tend to paint slowly, spending so many hours with a piece to me is like reading a good book in which I imagine the characters story behind the subject matter. Fact or fiction it makes my time at the easel even more enjoyable.
I was once commissioned to paint a still life including a retiring physicians stethoscope that had been handed down to him as well as used through out his career. I swear I could hear heartbeats as I was painting!
