About the Item

This painting beautifully captures a realistic view of an artist's studio. The boxes covered in oil paint fingerprints, the small dent in the wall, the palette, tubes of paint scatter throughout- all come together to show the beauty in the mundane and the beauty in the pursuit to create art for art's sake. Justo Revilla, born in Madrid, Spain in 1940 began his artistic career at the age of thirteen where he also attended the Arts and Crafts school. While working in a poster studio he practiced drawing from nature in the Circle of Fine Arts to eventually apply to college in San Fernando. After having graduated from college, at the age of twenty-five Revilla was actively participating in group exhibitions and competitions, meanwhile establishing in the art community a place for himself as a painter of unique talent and notable worth. Revilla has a sensitivity to form and creation that is exhibited through his master ability to draw, which he views as the technical aspect of the creative process. Influenced by Spanish Masters Francisco de Goya, Diego Velazquez and Franz Hals, these artists practiced and utilized the Spanish technique of tenebrism-- using various shades of dark hues to portray an image, a characteristic commonly seen throughout Revilla’s images. It has been said that Spanish master artists exhibit poetry through their subjects; Justo Revilla is not an exception to this rule for he possesses the talent to observe and penetrate his subject matter. Whether landscapes, figures, interiors, exteriors, still lifes or flowers, it is without question that Revilla is inspired by domestic life and the human experience. The journey of life and the human experience is a theme that Revilla expands upon within his paintings. By appealing to sentiments of the observer, Revilla depicts on canvas that he is empathetic to the individuals he portrays, those who live and have a past. Primarily depicting the elderly he believes that wisdom is achieved through life’s experiences. The ability to focus simultaneously on beauty and proportion, he successfully attempts to raise his subject from reality to a spiritual realm.

"Still Life" by Cornelis Le Mair 31 x 26 inch Oil on Board
By Cornelis Le Mair
Located in Atlanta, GA
Item is in excellent condition and has only been displayed in a gallery setting. Item includes frame; framed dimensions are approximately 38 x 33 inches. Cornelis le Mair is truly a renaissance man, encompassing all disciplines of the arts. He enjoys painting, drawing, writing, architecture, sculpture, and interior design. Le Mair was born in Eindhoven, The Netherlands in 1944. He began drawing and painting at the young age of five and while in kindergarten, he was often made to show his paintings in other classes even though he was shy about doing so. “When I could not play outside because of bad weather, I would sit in my bedroom and would draw.” His early art studies were widely influenced by the Rembrandt exhibit in the Rijksmuseum (1956) that he attended with his father. There le Mair was inspired by the Old Masters and “the desire to unravel all the mysteries hidden under the cracked varnish” began. Already having painted a lifesize copy of “The Nightwatch” on the wall of his bedroom, le Mair was continually driven by the Rembrandt exhibit. He began to experiment with resins, pigments and oils in order to hone and perfect the technique of the old masters. He studied drawings and paintings and early on developed the feeling of color and composition. After completing high school, he worked for a short period as a designer of woven fabrics. Although his heart desired to paint, he enjoyed having a pencil and brush in hand and a case full of art books and says, “This treasure of inspiring information took me further on track to the traditional trade.” At this same time, le Mair’s artistic endeavors led him to learn the art of music. First learning to play the guitar from friends, he began performing at youth centers. This love of music expanded into him learning to play the mandolin, turning lye, banjo, and bagpipes. Just after his eighteenth birthday, le Mair was accepted into military service where his lack of conforming led him to a maximum solitary confinement sentence. After a month in training, the army physician and le Mair agreed that he was born to be an artist and released le Mair from military services. Once he returned home, with the encouragement from his parents, le Mair began his art schooling at the Art Academy (Kustacademie) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. There he found that the school was geared for modernism and after painting a portrait of a fellow classmate, his teachers advised le Mair to look for a school where the traditional ideas were still taught. Longing to study the classical arts, he applied and was accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts (Koninklijke Kunstacademie) in Antwerp, Belgium in 1965. After studying under Professor Victor Dolphijn, le Mair graduated cum laude in portrait and figure paintings in 1968. He was then promoted to study as a student of the Higher Institute, a structure at a higher university level where he studied under Rik Slabbinck...

"Still Life with Architectural Columns and Pear" by Leon Olmo 31 x 52 inches
By Leon Olmo
Located in Atlanta, GA
Item is in excellent condition and has only been displayed in a gallery setting. With frame dimensions are approximately 44" x 64" Leon Olmo was born in Moron de la Frontera at the end of the 1940's beginning at a young age to study drawing and wax technique. From heightened stimulation incredible still-lifes are produced from the nearby aromas of lemons, jasmine, pomegranates, and medlars, fruits which often appear throughout his paintings. Olmo is a self-taught painter, reaching the status as one of Seville’s most talented artists through strict perseverance in drawing and painting. Working until complete exhaustion, Olmo attempts to capture all of himself with every image he creates. For Olmo, neatness and cleanliness go hand in hand when creating a work of art. Though he denies traditional academicism, Olmo does utilize a methodical approach in each painting that begins with strict preparation of the fibrapan board upon which he paints. Beginning with a primer composed of calcium sulfate and glue, he sands the board’s surface until smooth. This regimented routine is in accord with Olmo’s insistence of maintaining neatness and cleanliness for he has rejected the use of canvas where any imperfection is not up to standard. He then picks juicy fresh fruits from their trees and retrieves wooden boards from a collection that he has acquired over the years during walks with his father. Arranging the objects for the desired effect, the outcome will be a play of shadows between the background and brilliant center of the composition. With the brush he draws simple motifs and leaves layers of paint until he achieves a magic luminosity, where the observer can actually see through space, a transparent quality distinctly from the hand of Olmo. The recreation of natural elements in his paintings is to remind the observer of humanity’s material nature. The symbolic use of jasmine is special to the artist, in order to represent the grandeur of small things, six petals with an incredible scent which contain within them the magic of the artist and of his Andalusian land. Olmo’s dreamlike masterpieces contain human warmth that has an unsurpassable way of working their way into the hearts and minds of his collectors. Leon Olmo and his son Leon Reina make up a father and son painting...
