California Contemporary Art Marti Somers Figurative Abstract Whimsical Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Marti Somers Rice Bowl (an Asian inspired image with chopsticks and a bowl of rice) with fish. hand written poem verso. 24 X 24 inches A California artist, Somers received her BFA at the University of Hawaii. She returned to California and worked as a graphic designer at Stanford University and was a principal at Artefact Design in Palo Alto. But ultimately turned to painting. She opened Studio Believe in San Carlos and co-founded Somersault Studios, a non-profit publishing venture to benefit the arts of Northern California. Somers’ sensibility is both poetic and suggestive. Her scrapbook-like merger of natural images (both painted and collage) and writing, rendered in tactile, fragrant wax-based encaustic paint, is seductive and convincing. Rich compilations of vintage images, words, colors, and textures. Flowers, trees, and leaves share the space in each picture with animals, fragments of patterned paper, layers of thin oil paint over thick, glazes that partially obscure one layer and provide a new layer to work with. Stylized flowers, butterflies and birds appear prominently within Somers’ heavily textured, ‘antiqued’ bands of color and pattern. Robert Rauschenberg meets Odilon Redon in her assemblage juxtapositions of dreamy words and images. She has exhibited her work at Caldwell Snyder...

WAXING POETIC. encaustic landscape painting
Located in Palm Desert, CA
Waxing Poetic is an expression of lyrical Earthly beauty and serenity. Its title has the double meaning of both growing aesthetically and a nod to the painting medium used to create it, encaustic. This landscape draws on deep emotions in an imaginative and beautiful way, pleasing both the senses and the mind. It has a deeply felt beauty, and a calm oasis of serenities. Bands of gold tether the gentle blue heavens to the fertile soil of mother earth. The high notes and the low notes of color whisper to the senses, just as nature skillfully and poetically stirs the imagination and weaves tranquility together with a vibrant yet bold intimacy. Sylvia Torres, was born in California, one will find the ocean, sky and mountains reflected in her work. She also spent several years in Texas, where she attended the University of Houston, studied commercial art and became the Art Director at several advertising agencies. Eventually, the lure of California drew her back to California. Ms. Torres has been an instructor of art workshops at Idyllwild Arts, Carnegie Art Museum, Studio Channel Islands Art Center, Collage Artists Of America, the Ventura County Art Museum, University of California/Riverside, She has exhibited in solo and group shows including: Palm Springs Art Museum, Santa Paula Art Museum, Ventura Music Festival Invitational, Channel Islands Sanctuary, San Luis Obispo Art Museum, Santa Paula Art Museum, Marion Meyer Contemporary Art, Laguna Beach, CA, East/West One, Invitational, in Thousand Oaks, CA, Ventura Government Center Invitational, Ventura, CA. Sylvia was interviewed live, and her history video recorded by Donna Granata, founder of Focus On The Masters. Sylvia’s video history is permanently documented in their archives. Torres’ work has been acquired by private and corporate collectors: Focus On The Masters, Carnegie Art Museum permanent collection, Handel Evans past President of CSU Channel Islands, University, Infinity Bank, Ventura, CA, and others. Torres’ paintings appear on the sets of popular television shows: Big Little Big Lies, Criminal Minds, Chicago Med, Grey’s Anatomy...

View from the Train: Cityscape Oil Painting, View of Brooklyn
Located in Hudson, NY
View from the Train, 2019 24" X 40" x 1", oil on canvas This contemporary oil painting depicting a metropolitan view is the work of realist painter Patty Neal. The painting offers an intimate view of the city, as seen from a window, as it peeks from behind two metal structures. The dark browns and bright golds beautifully compliment the dusty blue, gray sky. Neal works highlight everyday city scenes, utilitarian infrastructure, and industrial or electrical apparatus. Artist statement: A life is an accumulation of experiences: visual, emotional and mental. By compartmentalizing these snippets of life we create boundaries. The focus of my work for many years has been the exploration of these various life aspects and how they are bound together or bound from each other. My process is often literally composed of boundaries. I make a painting by putting together multiple panels, or I segment a single panel into separate visual spaces. The works are made up of pieces or elements of city and landscape. While exploring the concepts of boundaries I play with visual “reality.” Sometimes I combine images that are upside down with those that are not and juxtapose images from different contexts. Literal boundaries, such as walls fences, expanses of water and highway median strips are also used. My intent is to invite viewers to look beyond these boundaries to see the possibilities of a connected whole. Untitled I (Dreamy Blue Sky with two clouds, encaustic and oil on panel)
Located in Hudson, NY
"Untitled I" by Valerie Hammond (Small Contemporary cloudscape painting in wax and oil) 12" x 12" , oil and encaustic on panel 13 x 13 x 2 inches framed in pale birch wood floater frame This painting is an older work of this artist, not typical of what she is most known for. This enchanting cloudscape has a translucent surface, thanks to the use of beeswax mixed with pigments. Fluffy white clouds disappear into the distance. Artist Statement: As an artist I have found that process is a fundamental part of my work. In practice this means that I might have ideas about where my work is going, but often the physical process of the work informs what actually happens in my studio. I am interested in evoking sensation and making work which is corporeal in nature. While the figures and portraits may begin to point towards or suggest sentiment, it is important to me that the work is not sentimental but experiential. Growing up in a small agricultural community in California, my exposure to cultural institutions was limited, at best. I have always been drawn to places and objects that are full of mystery. Some of my most significant visual influences were images I saw in church. While the religious aspect of my church experience was less pressing, the visual cues at church were what kept my attention. I am fascinated by shrines and ex-votos-devotional votive objects that families make to show love and respect. These objects inspire the type of physical intimacy that holds my artistic practice. Asian art is also a strong influence on my work. From Tibetan medical drawings...
