About the Item
The Whataburger Bag Contemporary Texan Artist Oil on panel 12" x 9"
Whataburger began as a single burger stand in Corpus Christi on August 8, 1950, as post-war prosperity helped fuel automobile culture and the popularity of drive-in restaurants. By the end of the decade, Whataburger had about 20 restaurants and opened its first location outside of Texas, in Pensacola, Florida.
In 2009, Whataburger moved its headquarters from Corpus Christi to San Antonio, and it continues to have its head office there. Whataburger has a massive footprint in Texas, which is still considered the company's home state: Its website lists more than 1,000 restaurants, of which 740 are in Texas and more than 100 are in the Houston area. And Whataburger's menu reflects its roots, featuring items such as taquitos, Dr Pepper shakes, and ingredients such as jalapenos.
Those are the basics. Here's more to know about Texas' own burger chain.
Max Guarnaccia paints from objects like bottles, florals and portraits that he sets up in his studio in Houston, Texas. You are able to see the brush strokes in all of his paintings.
Artist Statement: As a painter I aspire to bring beautiful art objects into the world through the medium of paint. I am a self-taught oil painter and muralist who in recent years has largely focused on studying technique and traditional methods of representation. I am pursuing the cliché of “learning the rules in order to break them”.
This pursuit has been greatly reinforced by my experiencing of representational art to be both inclusive and successful in its capacity to connect with an audience. Despite this fact, my work ultimately aims to graduate from a straight forward rendering of nature. I believe strongly that painting shines the brightest when the languages of abstraction and representation are employed together within a picture. There are of course a myriad of ways to achieve this aim, and the spectrum of possibilities is what currently inspires and grounds my painting practice.
Max grew up in a suburb of Washington D.C. where walls are painted one of three colors: grey, brown or white. Growing up his narrow experience making visual art was relegated to drawing on the periphery of his school work. It was not until he moved to Richmond, Virginia at the age of 17 that he was exposed to graffiti, murals and a general culture of the arts. Drawing remained a compulsive habit for Max and in his early twenties he began translating those drawings onto walls with various types of paint, this became an obsession. For much of his twenties Max spent time traveling and painting walls across the United States and abroad. These experiences reinforced his love for painting and provided him with infinite canvas to explore different techniques and to express an increasing interest in depicting the world. Around 2019 Max took that creative momentum back inside and began studying oil painting techniques and traditional methods of representation. He now divides his time as a full time artist between a committed oil painting discipline and mural painting in the Houston area and beyond.

ARTIST EXPLANATION OF THE PAINTINGS:
"Mona's Sister": oil on cradled birch panel. Ready to hang with wire on the back
They are blurred. So I paint them with a regular brush, let the paint get partially dry, and then I use a brush to go over it many times to blur the paint.
Sometime if it gets too blurred I go back in and do some more painting to define an area, and then use a big special brush to blur the image again.
Also seen in this listing are other available paintings by the artist which can be found in a separate listings.

Sunset, San Antonio, 20x16, oil on panel Texas
This painting by Garrett Middaugh shows the beauty of a Texas Sunset outside of San Antonio. A group of low hills are in the background which surround San Antonio. San Antonio is a major city in south-central Texas with a rich colonial heritage. The Alamo, an 18th-century Spanish mission preserved as a museum, marks an infamous 1836 battle for Texan independence from Mexico. Following the San Antonio River, the miles-long River Walk is a landmark pedestrian promenade lined with cafes and shops. HemisFair Park’s 750-ft. Tower of the Americas overlooks the city.
The artist is a regional landscape painter working in oils and pastels whose subject matter varies from the mountains and desert of west Texas to the wetlands along the Texas coast, with a strong focus on Texas forests and trees. and to the Rocky Mountains The artist is in corporate and private collections around the world.
Garrett Middaugh is a regional landscape painter working in oils and pastels whose subject matter varies from the mountains and desert of west Texas to the wetlands along the Texas coast, with a strong focus on Texas forests and trees. His palette is muted, stark, embracing the neutral colors of everyday experience. Avoiding the romantic, his landscapes are often painted at high noon or in the dead of winter. He paints in a fluid hyper realist style and feels most influenced by other landscape artists such as Neil Welliver and Rackstraw Downes. He sees landscape painting as a form of meditation, projecting outward, while solving equations and mapping the scene, realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances.
"Landscape painting is for me a means of projecting outward, of meditating, examining the here and now of place. The process often feels similar to the satisfaction of solving math equations, intuitively realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances. For the most part I paint Texas. For several years I devoted a significant amount of time to painting its forests -- the complexity of forest alleviated my sense and the nearness and density of growth was comforting. I have also ventured into west Texas and Big Bend, and occasionally have attempted to capture the mesmerizing serenity of central Texas farm and ranchland."
