About the Item

Created in 2025, “Tungsten” is part of Patrick Nevins’s ongoing Elements Series, in which he explores the beauty, significance, and material properties of chemical elements. Measuring 6 x 6 x 0.12 inches (framed to 8.25 x 8.25 inches), this original oil on board focuses on the tungsten light bulb—a familiar yet historically transformative object. In this composition, the letter “W,” tungsten’s chemical symbol, appears prominently, with “74” inscribed on the bulb to note its atomic number. The painting also subtly references important dates tied to tungsten’s discovery and use. Nevins’s technical precision imbues the bulb with a near-trompe-l'œil quality, capturing reflections on the metallic threads and the gently curved glass. Through careful shading and sharp contrast, he emphasizes the bulb’s geometry against a minimalist white background, creating a compelling interplay of light and shadow. The work is completed with a sleek black frame, providing a striking border that highlights the dimensionality of the painting. “Tungsten” invites collectors to reconsider an everyday object as both art and scientific artifact. This piece stands as a testament to Nevins’s fascination with the elemental underpinnings of the world, inviting viewers to examine how even the simplest inventions—like the humble light bulb—are rooted in layers of scientific achievement and visual allure. About the artist: Born and raised in Townsend, Massachusetts, Patrick has been drawing and sketching as far back as he can remember. Although always interested in art, it wasn't until after service in the Marine Corps that he enrolled at the College of Charleston with a focus on studio art and painting. Initially drawn to the beauty of the female form, Patrick has been refining his art and playing with different subject matter but always striving for realism. In recent years, he has found a real interest in still life and the genre of Trompe' l'oeil.
