This very realistic watercolor depicts a flowering plant, a New Guinea Creeper The colors are rich and saturated. The composition makes wonderful use of shadow and light to give definition and depth. The painting is on heavy Arches paper. It is mounted and floating on a simple acid-free mat and enclosed by a metal frame. The painting, mat and frame are in very good condition.
Born in San Francisco and raised in Marin County, Sally Robertson was always the class artist. Attending UC Santa Barbara during the Pop Art era, she found the aesthetics of soup cans and Brillo boxes could not entice her into being a full-time artist. She switched to the History of Art, later earning a Master’s Degree at UC Berkeley. Even then, late 19th-century art nouveau resonated with her, a style sensuous and decorative with an emphasis on floral motifs. With this background, Sally joined a gallery on Union Street in San Francisco, which evolved into Thackrey & Robertson, significant dealers in works of art on paper from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Traveling widely for her gallery, she saw the originals of her most revered watercolor painters, including Charles Demuth, Charles Renee Mackintosh, and Joseph Raffael. After moving to Bolinas in 1978, while still working at the gallery, she began to cultivate her property and joined Strybing Arboretum (now the San Francisco Botanical Garden). Somewhat intimidated by her first-hand knowledge of great watercolors, this enticed her to enroll in a six-week course, “Watercolor in the Spring Garden,” at the Arboretum in 1986. She learned enough techniques to become obsessed with watercolor and never looked back. She went on to have three solo shows (1996, 2003, 2007) at the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture at the Arboretum.
Her garden in Bolinas started as a 100 by 100-foot parcel. Practically wild, she has stewarded this piece of earth into a magnificent garden by adding neighboring lots to become an almost acre plot. Inspired in part by gardens of Provence, it features shaped shrubs that punctuate garden spaces defined by meandering pathways. Plants are chosen both as part of the garden’s palette and as potential subjects for her watercolor work. Her spacious downstairs studio opens into this magical Eden replete with a large koi pond.
During her career as an art dealer, both her painting and gardening evolved together in a symbiotic way. After the gallery closed in 1995, Sally became a full-time artist, gardener, and teacher. (Full disclosure: I was a student on two of her Art Trek trips to France and Tahiti.) In 1994 her friend Mary Nisbet, of California Orchids, Bolinas, introduced her to the world of orchids. The “strange beauty of orchids” resonated as subjects and offered a new visual vocabulary. For 20 years, from 1996 to 2015, Sally designed the posters for the Pacific Orchid Exposition in San Francisco and exhibited her work there. The graphic technique of flowers bursting out of their backgrounds, first used for a poster in 1997, was to become a signature part of her painting. Her orchid paintings were featured in “The Artistry of Orchids” exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., in 2000.
Sally sees her garden as a palette, and her telling credo of “a painting in every petal” reminds us of her rich symbiosis with her garden. This exhibition follows her work from early studies to the fully realized watercolors of later years.

About the artist.
Born and educated in Cleveland Gary Bukovnik has lived in San Francisco for over 25 years. Primarily using the mediums of watercolor, monotype, and lithograph, Bukovnik creating colorful floral images of great depth and intensity.
Bukovnik collaborates with Trillium Press, whose owner and master printer, David Salgado, studied at the Tamarind Workshop, formerly in Los Angeles.
In 2003, the American Academy in Rome invited Bukovnik to attend the academy as a Visiting Artist for six weeks. He was asked to attend a second session in February 2005. In 2001, he was selected to create a poster for the prestigious List Collection, which creates posters to commemorate programs at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. Lincoln Center past contributors have included Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, Alex Katz, Elizabeth Murray, and Donald Sultan. The work of Gary Bukovnik is held in public and private collections worldwide.

This artwork "Lily" C.1975 is an original colors serigraph by noted American artist Lowell Nesbitt, 1933-1993. It is hand signed, dated and numbered A.P. 6/30 in pencil by the artist. The image size is 23.75 x 26 inches, sheet size is 29.35 x 31.25 inches. It is in excellent condition, it has a very light printing ink soiling at the left margin, see picture #6 and a light crease at the lower center margin.
About the artist:
Lowell Nesbitt, who was born in Baltimore on Oct. 4, 1933, was a graduate of the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia and also attended the Royal College of Art in London, where he worked in stained glass & etching.
In 1964, the Corcoran Gallery or Art in Washington gave him one of his first museum exhibitions, and by the mid 1970's he had decided to leave the museum a bequest of more than $1 million. But in 1989, he publicly revoked the bequest after the Corcoran canceled a disputed exhibition of photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, who was an old friend. Mr. Nesbitt named the Phillips Collection as a beneficiary instead.
He was frequently grouped with the Photo Realists, but his images were more interpretively distorted, somewhat loosely painted and boldly abbreviated. He had many subjects: studio interiors, articles of clothing, piles of shoes and groupings of fruits and vegetables. He also painted his dog, a Rottweiler named Echo, the Neoclassical facades of SoHo's 19th century cast-iron buildings and several of Manhattan's major bridges.
Despite such variety, Lowell Nesbitt was best known for gargantuan images or irises, roses, lilies and other flowers, which he often depicted in close up so that their petals seemed to fill the canvas. Dramatic, implicitly sexual and a little ominous, they earned the artist a popularity with the general public that tended to overshadow his reputation within the art world.
In 1980, the United States Postal Service issued four stamps based on Mr. Nesbitt's floral paintings. He also served as the official artist for the space flights of Apollo 9 and Apollo 13.

About the artist:
Born in Montreal in 1952, Suezan was influenced early in her life by the works of modern Japanese woodblock printmakers which hung throughout her parents’ home. She attended the Fine Arts programme at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick (1969 - 1971), The Ontario College of Art (1971-73), L’ ecole du Musee des Beaux Arts (1974), Nova Scotia College of Art and Design -BFA (1975) as well as a very intensive year of study with Toshi Yoshida in Tokyo (1984-85).
She has exhibited extensively in both public and private galleries throughout North America and Japan. Recent exhibitions include solo shows in Tokyo, Osaka, Okinawa, and Boston with group exhibitions at the Wenniger Gallery, Boston, Royal Canadian Academy in Toronto and the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa.
Her paintings and woodblock prints are found in many collections such as The Canada Council Art Bank, The Nickle Art Museum, The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, The Royal Bank of Canada, Prince Takamanonamiya Norihito, the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo, The Thomas Moore Institute as well as private collections.
Suezan Aikins was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant in 1983, Nova Scotia Department of Culture - Development Grants in 1980, 1987 and 1988. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 1990 and received the Canadian Progress Club- Women of Excellence Award for Culture in 1993. Her work has been featured in a number of television documentaries as well as many Canadian magazines.
