French Impressionist Still Life, Oil on Board, 'Flowers and Faïance'.

About the Item

Early 20th century Impressionist still life of flowers in a Faïance tureen. Signed bottom right by the artist but as yet undeciphered. Presented in a period painted wooden frame. A thoroughly charming painting in subtle pastel tones of flowers (probably poppies) elegantly draped across a gorgeous Faïance tureen sitting on a lovely reflective marble surface. The tureen is beautifully detailed with its Impressionist additions of blue decoration and the lid topped with a golden pear. The light has been dealt with beautifully as it bounces off the creamy white Faïance and then the eye is drawn to the expertly painted reflection of the tureen base on the darker marble surface. The poppies add another level of joy in their varied colours and soften the whole composition. There is a rustic feel to this otherwise rather grand still life. Firstly, the slightly impressionistic approach, then the use of paint with some grain to it (possibly an addition of sand) and finally the softening of an otherwise possibly austere subject with the addition of the colourful poppies. A very charming painting. Faience or faïence is the general English language term for fine tin-glazed pottery. The invention of a white pottery glaze suitable for painted decoration, by the addition of an oxide of tin to the slip of a lead glaze, was a major advance in the history of pottery. The invention seems to have been made in Iran or the Middle East before the ninth century. A kiln capable of producing temperatures exceeding 1,000 °C (1,830 °F) was required to achieve this result, the result of millennia of refined pottery-making traditions. The term is now used for a wide variety of pottery from several parts of the world, including many types of European painted wares. Italian tin-glazed earthenware, at least the early forms, is called maiolica in English, Dutch wares are called Delftware, and their English equivalents English delftware, leaving "faience" as the normal term in English for French, German, Spanish, Portuguese wares and those of other countries not mentioned (it is also the usual French term, and fayence in German). The name faience is simply the French name for Faenza, in the Romagna near Ravenna, Italy, where a painted majolica ware on a clean, opaque pure-white ground, was produced for export as early as the fifteenth century. In English 19th-century usage "faience" was often used to describe "any earthenware with relief modelling decorated with coloured glazes", including much glazed architectural terracotta and Victorian majolica, adding a further complexity to the list of meanings of the word.

The Tulips, Art Deco Still Life Oil on Canvas of Tulips in a Vase in an Interior
Located in Cotignac, FR
French Art Deco still life of a vase of tulips in an interior by Auguste Mallard. The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a period patinated wood frame. A colourful and strong painting of an interior view, a table with books and as the centre piece a beautiful blue ceramic vase with twisted handles holding a magnificent bouquet of brightly coloured tulips. Mallard has captured the abandon of the blooms in the vase, the way tulips twist and furl raising and lowering their beautiful colourful petals. The colours of the flowers really stand out against the more muted tones of the background, curtain and table. A very elegant and stylish painting. This painting has the feel of some of the still life works from the same period by Tamara de Lempicka who was a contemporary of Mallard painting...
