About the Item
This is not your grandmother’s typical still life painting. But if she was young and hip for her time, maybe it is. Painted on stretched canvas and dated (19)56, it is only signed with the Initial “H”. Being by an unknown artist of the 1950’s, the vibrancy of this painting makes up for the lack of a full signature and slight naïveté. Red tulips wildly positioned in an orange pitcher dominate the foreground. Moreover, a blue checkered backdrop adds additional interest and excitement to what most may have painted as just another static tulips in a vase still life. The color of the stems and leaves are a vibrant green with flowing lines. The toned-down green base or table adds additional color and geometric form to the overall composition. Lastly, the shadow of one of the tulips shows against the surface of the pitcher, suggesting depth. That’s a lot of action packed into one modernist still life. Especially nice is how the tulips and pitcher take up so much of the painting field. They are upfront and personal, no apologies.
The painting is oil on canvas and is in good condition. A small professional repair and an overall cleaning was recently completed on this work. There is a very slight ripple to the canvas that is barely noticeable, certainly not from any distance. Very slight stretcher lines, mainly along the left side, are visible only at close inspection. The painting itself measures 18” x 26”. It is housed in a quality wood custom frame with solid architectural lines and coloration that gives additional pop to the painting without overpowering it. The frame is in very good condition and was custom matched for this vintage work. Overall framed dimensions are 24” x 32”.
This strikingly modern painting is a joyful image, sure to brighten any wall or room. And, the tulips will stay fresh and last forever.
