About the Item
A 19th-century red fire call box is smothered in street advertisements and graffiti. It dominates the left half of the composition. Behind i, a street-level facade is equally smeared with post-bills and graffiti. A single figure lies horizontally on a cardboard matt. There is some connection between an image of Jesus on the call box and the prostrate figure.
This image is signed, dated and numbered 2/15 lower right recto. Other sizes are available. The work is unframed and printed later. Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
