About the Item

A simple park bench acts as inspiration for an early example of semi-abstraction in color photography. Pioneering Color Photographer Mitchell Funk waits for "magic hour" light to illuminate the bench, which transforms from a utilitarian object into an abstract pattern of five vertical lines of equal measure. Funk used a long lens that threw the background out of focus. The resulting image is a harmonious interplay of light and dark organic shapes. This image was chosen to be in the groundbreaking color photography show curated by Henri Ghent . It was first Color Photography show at a major museum was trailblazing and historically important and makes this photograph important. Additionally, the show was assembled by a historically important black curator; Henri Ghent . Exhibited: Images en Couleur, Brooklyn Museum, 1970. In 1970, photography was just marginally considered to be art. Color Photography was not even part of the art conversation.
