Mitchell Funk
Multiple Exposure of Colorful Flowers St. Patrick's Cathedral

1971

About the Item

It's 1971, and most photographers were shooting in black and white. Fine Art Photography was not yet in the mainstream vocabulary of museums — almost no art galleries considered or exhibited color photography as fine art. Yet, at the tender age of 21, self-taught photographer Mitchell Funk was skilled in the art of picture making and experimenting with the color aspect of color photography. He was also inventing new ways to take a picture. In "Multiple Exposure of Colorful Flowers St. Patrick's Cathedral," young Funk shoots a straight shot of a flower bed and then, then does 6 on-the-spot in-camera multiple exposures overlaying the flower images with different filters. Finally, he processes the Ektachrome film in C 22 to get this eye-pleasing spectrum of color. Fifty-three years later, the image still looks fresh and inventive. More importantly, it prefigures much of what we see in contemporary art concerning the use of unexpected color. Signed, dated and numbered 2/15 lower right, , Printed later, other size available, unframed - Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper.
