He is one of the best-known and most versatile actors of our time. He was nominated for an Oscar twelve times and won three of them, making him one of Hollywood's most successful actors. Albert Watson photographed the actor during deep winter in Aspen. He is standing on a balcony in the snow, leaning on the railing. In the background, trees on a snowy hill are visible. The actor is wearing a tweed jacket, a plaid scarf, mirrored sunglasses, and a hat. He is pulling up his shoulders with a surprised expression, letting the viewer know how cold it is. The image is simple yet lighthearted and fun, making for an easily recognizable and iconic portrait of the actor. From the iconic Hitchcock series to extravagant shoots for Iris van Herpen, the British star photographer is one of the founding fathers of fine art photography. Throughout the last four decades, Albert Watson has made a name for himself as one of the world’s most successful fashion and advertising photographers, creating over 100 Vogue covers. Albert Watson
Albert Watson studied graphic design before becoming a photographer. His manipulation of contrast and superior sense of composition distinguish his portraits of celebrities and models. With an emphasis on the formal and sculptural properties of his sitters' bodies, Watson's images have not only appeared in numerous American and European fashion magazines but also in museum and gallery exhibitions.
In Watson’s famous nude photographs of Kate Moss taken on her 18th birthday in 1993, the model's spine pokes through the skin of her curved back, like the scales of a dinosaur, while the right side of her body is entirely shaded. In a 1989 portrait, Naomi Campbell's head is silhouetted against a grey surface, while her bare shoulders and the arch of her back are illuminated. In 2010, he was awarded the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship.
