About the Item
Brian Kosoff, an accomplished master of the photographic process, spent most of his life in photography and still considers himself a student of the medium. As a teenager, he was inspired by an uncle, and went on to spend 25 years as an award winning NYC advertising photographer. His meticulous work in advertising brought him assignments for many Fortune 500 companies. It was the ideal laboratory to lay the groundwork for his luminous fine art photography.
The motivation to create photographs is quite simple for Brian Kosoff. “When I see a special moment or quality of light, something that moves me, I want to express it photographically. I want my photo to tell a story, have meaning, or have beauty”. His vision and photographic skill brings an ethereal quality and mood to the images created. His minimalist, perfectionist’s eye eliminates any element that might break the beautiful mood set by what he’s chosen to show us in the boundaries of the print.
Brian Kosoff is well schooled in all the classic techniques of the masters of photography, but he has not shunned the use of technology entirely. He uses 4×5 view cameras, Fuji 680 and Fuji 617 cameras, Mamiya 7 rangefinders and Rolleiflex SLR’s and chooses his equipment based on the destination at hand. Heading out for months at a time and heavily equipped for the sole purpose of his photographic pursuits, his arsenal of equipment includes night vision, laser rangefinder, GPS, satellite image and topography software, astronomical software, even equipment and books to help forecast the moment to moment weather.
Having spent so long creating photographs for others, he creates his photographs first for the simple joy of doing his work. He is thrilled and honored when others find pleasure and solace from the work he does.
Gallery 270 represents distinguished photographers of the 20th Century and the emergent photographers of the 21st Century from around the world. We place particular emphasis on modern emerging photographers employing traditional processes such as platinum/palladium, cyanotype, and gum bichromate, where the hand of the artist is much more intimately engaged.

"My fascination started when I first saw industrial centres of Upper and Lower Silesia,’ says Cała. ‘The landscape was terrifying and beautiful at the same time. It did not change for the whole period from the 19th century to the end of communism in Poland." - Michal Cala
