About the Item
Silver Gelatine Print by Erich Andres, 1950
This black-and-white photograph from 1950 shows three young men working in what appears to be a mine. The boys are gathered around a large wooden support beam, likely used to stabilize the mine. Their expressions vary from smiling to slightly serious, but all seem relaxed in the moment. One of the boys is shirtless, which could indicate the physically demanding nature of the work.
The boy on the left is crouching with a broad smile, while the one in the middle is standing with a cap on, looking directly at the camera. The atmosphere seems informal and friendly, despite the tough working conditions typical of a mining environment. The dim lighting and rough wooden beams reinforce the impression of being underground. The photograph captures a candid moment of camaraderie among young workers in a challenging setting.
Andres was born 1905 in Germany and passed away 1992. He started his career as a photographer in 1920. He was one of the first photographers, who used a Leica. His images today are displayed in several museums, for example in the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was a contributor for Edward Steichens Exhibition "The family of man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951.
