About the Item
This young Fula shepherd, much younger than is perhaps suggested in this photograph, was walking through a small village with his animals in the searing midday heat of Niger. He was wearing a turban wrapped around his head with only his eyes showing. He moved into the shade and uncurled his turban to reveal the long, braided hair which is typical of Fula and Wodaabe nomads in this part of Niger.
I could feel the weight of this young boy’s thoughts and his responsibilities – a long way removed from the care-free mannerisms that the west associates with youth.
John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and his subjects in their day to day attire.
The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a contemporary look.
