Born and raised in Cuba, Julio Mitchel moved to New York at the age of seventeen.
He was born and raised in Cuba and has worked in Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Peru and Brazil. “Each culture is totally different and they have different racial mixes” A few months after the Cuban revolution, Mr. Mitchel, then 17, went to New York City. Though he had intended to be a lawyer, he didn’t enjoy school. He took a series of jobs as a photographic assistant, mostly to fashion photographers. While he was picking up technical skills, he developed the habit of regularly expressing his contempt for the fashion world. His life changed when he took a photography class with Lisette Model at the New School. He photographed in the Middle East and Northern Ireland but found himself somewhat lost — too artsy for newspapers and news magazines; too journalistic for art galleries.
Mr. Mitchel received two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and published two exquisite books that have long been out of print, “Tu Me Amas?” (1991) and “Triptych” (1990). Mostly, he survived by teaching at the School of Visual Arts, Cooper Union and the New School. Photo projects have taken him to the Middle East and Northern Ireland and other areas of conflict as well as to Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Peru and Brazil. Mitchel has taken great care with the technical aspects of the medium, but the greater impact lies in his humanistic depiction of the societal conditions around him. His work exhibits the requisite empathy of great documentary photographers but his vision is rendered with the aesthetic control of a fine art photographer. Indeed, as a young photographer, Mitchel sought out the great W. Eugene Smith and it is easy to see Smith’s influence upon these beautiful gelatin silver prints. His vintage prints taken from the 1960s through the 1990s and depict the beauty and desolation and intrigue of the city by recording the lives of those who frequent the clubs and missions and synagogues and pool halls; and those who work the fish markets, the firemen who respond to desperate situations; the commuters on the ferries and trains and subways; the revelers and lovers at Coney Island or parading through Little Italy. Julio Mitchel has exhibited his photography widely, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and other major international museums. His photography is also represented in numerous permanent collections and has twice received major artist grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. He had major exhibitions at the Musée de L’Eysée, Lausanne, Switzerland and les Rencontres Internationales, Arles, France. Both monographs are now out of print.

Black and white Maritime 1970's Seascape Photograph.
Martine Franck (2 April 1938 – 16 August 2012) was a Belgian documentary and portrait photographer. She was a member of Magnum Photos for over 32 years. Franck was the second wife of Henri Cartier-Bresson and co-founder and president of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation.
Franck studied art history at the University of Madrid and at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris. After struggling through her thesis (on French sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and the influence of cubism on sculpture), she said she realized she had no particular talent for writing, and turned to photography instead.
In 1963, Franck's photography kick started following trips to the Far East, having taken pictures with her cousin’s Leica camera...

Jerusalem, Israel Western Wall Ed of 5 Vintage Silver gelatin Photograph Print
By Mikael Levin
Located in Surfside, FL
Photo Image taken in black & white of Western Wall (Wailing Wall) Kotel Hamaaravi in Jerusalem Israel. Hand signed, dated and titled. From very small edition of just 5 prints.
(American-Israeli) Born in New York City, Mikael Levin grew up in Israel, the United States and France. He attended Williams College and received a B.A. in Film and Photography from Hampshire College in 1976 before studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Levin's first published project was Silent Passage (1985), a series of romantic, reflective landscape photographs inspired by a pond in Sweden. This was followed by several other series, including Les Quatre Saisons du Territoire, a study of the changes in land use in western France; Borders, which focused on the political, practical, and conceptual transformation of national borders in contemporary Europe; and War Story, Levin's reconstruction of the journey his father, the war correspondent Meyer Levin, made while traveling with the photographer Eric Schwab during World War II. Meyer Levin wrote of these experiences in In Search (1950), which described his view of the final battles of World War II and the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps in 1944-45. Levin photographed sites his father and Schwab had visited as they appear today. These photographs and passages from the elder Levin's writings formed an installation work at ICP in 1997, and were also published as a book. Levin's most recent project, Common Places: Cultural Identity in the Urban Environment, considers the relationship between the past and present in the urban environments of four European cities: Katrineholm, Cambrai, Erfurt, and Thessaloniki.
Although inflected differently in each series, Mikael Levin's photographs have in common their interest in the emotional, intellectual, and historical significance of landscape. His work ignites landscape's capacity simultaneously to recall and overwrite the events of the past, especially in works such as War Story and Common Places. His photographs represent a new approach to landscape photography that reinvigorates this traditional genre.
