Edition Size: 12 In the mountains of America, my experience is that the really cold conditions tend to be on cloudless days first thing in the morning, particularly at sunrise when the temperature briefly dips. Operating when it is frigid is a real examination, not just of one’s hunger to get the shot but one’s fluency with the camera. Hand warmers are such a wonderful invention. This morning, up on the Durango & Silverton narrow gauge railroad, was one such occasion. The storm had cleared and was replaced by a cloudless sky and frigid temperatures. At sunrise we were down to around -15°F or -26°C and these conditions offered so much potential for the filmmaker as everything froze - from human beards and human breath to horse breath. I am always nervous of boring people and anything in a picture that defies gravity tends to work for me as it adds energy and dynamism. The props I had that morning gave every chance to fully embrace this modus operandi - especially if my camera was pointed directly either side of the rising sun. My cowboy - who is a dead ringer for Rip from the Yellowstone Series - is a charming Texan called Cole Nallion rather than Cole Hauser who plays Rip Wheeler. Cole worked as a cowboy extra and handler in another Taylor Sheridan series - 1883 - and it is easy to see why he and Sam Elliott got along. "This portrait taken at around 11,000 feet in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda was as hard earned as any portrait I have taken. It can be a slog up the mountain in the rainy season and even when you encounter a silverback, so many variables that are beyond anyone’s control have to work in the favor of the artist. Firstly, I prefer cloud cover, as a strong sun scattering shafts of intense light through the canopy of the rainforest is not a good bedfellow for portraiture. Secondly, I always prefer some degree of room to work with and 50% of my trips up that hill have not given me that opportunity - the vegetation is just too dense - on the ground and above. I do need some light to play with to help my depth of focus. Thirdly, the silverback has to play ball - and that is not easy - in my experience the earlier the encounter in the day, the greater the opportunity of meeting an alert and compliant gorilla. This remote area is geologically angry and in deep winter it is fairly inhospitable, but in the summer, it becomes something of a tourist resort for the local Icelandics and all too crowded for how we operate. We would always choose inhospitable over crowded. I have filmed here in the winter in the past, but struggled to do justice to the uniquely raw ecosystem. As always there is an element of knowing how to get it right by initially getting it hopelessly wrong. In particular, this is not a safe place without engaging locals, because the ground underneath, much like Yellowstone in Wyoming, is not to be taken for granted. To be brave and work close to the geysers needs permits and guides. But in 2022, we finally had our rewards. The weather plays such a big role in the field; no more so than up here at 66 degrees north where the Norse Gods granted my wish for strong winds and good light. It was the wind that amplified the trail of steam and allowed me to work a comfortable distance from the source without losing the effect. It was then up to me to work the strong late afternoon light to the best of my advantage. The end result is a strong image and certainly authentic. Looking through stills of John Ford’s iconic film, Stagecoach, there was one image from the filming in 1939 that popped up on my screen time and time again - the stagecoach moving right to left with the unmistakable monoliths of Monument Valley in the background. There is no indication as to whether John Wayne was inside the stagecoach, but that mattered little, this was the perfect visual in what many have described as the perfect western. The location of the old still from Stagecoach is on private land right on the Arizona/Utah border not far from the Monument Valley visitor centre and my production team secured permission to film there. It struck me, given the direction of travel was westerly, if we used a wagon as opposed to a stagecoach, we could use the first rays of light to dramatic effect as they diffract through the foreground content. The trick would then be to find a dip in the terrain which would allow for the monolith to pop out above the wagon and horses...

Little then happened as the stockmarket crashed in 1929 and America fell into the Great Depression. But in 1939, Goulding learned that a Hollywood Studio was looking for a location to shoot a major Southwestern movie. He persuaded a photographer - Josef Muench - to prepare a booklet of 10 x 8 contact prints of the most dramatic formations of Monument Valley such as the three sisters and Goulding took them to Hollywood and showed them to John Ford. Ford immediately agreed that Stagecoach should be filmed in Monument Valley and over the next 25 years he would shoot nine of his most influential films there. "In retrospect, my photograph Mankind, taken in South Sudan in 2014, was a stepping stone in my career. It was authentic, it had a biblical scale to it and could be looked at for a long time. Haunting and hellish one minute and serene and ethereal the next. Mankind elicited an emotional reaction despite how foreign the subject matter was. The editions of the picture sold out quickly and the hammer price at Sotheby’s of $78,000 was then a record for my work. Since 2014, awareness of my art has grown materially, and I am sure this powerful image has played a role. It was taken at a dangerous time in South Sudan’s short history and recently, during 2019 and 2020, the violence got worse. It simply was not safe for foreigners as many areas were loosely governed and guns were round every corner. It was sketchy at best and downright toxic at worst. But since 2021, some calm has returned and tribal skirmishes in the cattle camps are now less common. I thought it was time to return. After all, I’d had eight years to think about what I could do differently. Cameras have certainly improved, and I have a further eight years of experience under my belt. I also had maintained contacts in South Sudan, in particular with those in charge of the large cattle camps to the south of Rumbek. This is no place to go without inside help, security protection and best in class field logistics. There must be a plan and there must be attention to detail. But I knew it would be a mistake to go back and try to copy what I did eight years ago; it would hint at a lack of creative progression and courage. I needed to do better and offer a new story, to go backwards would be damaging at many levels. I had been preoccupied by that fear for some time and I knew that I had to be bold. The Lakes areas of South Sudan are just about on a map, but way off the grid for most. It is the most basic of existences and the only material source of employment is the cattle camps. In 2014, I filmed near the town of Yirol in a camp on a Nile tributary, but this time I wanted to travel further into the interior and find an even bigger camp on the way to Rumbek. My premise was to play on scale and my leaning was always to go bigger not smaller. I am always greedy in the field. The Dinka tribe are the world’s tallest people, their cattle camps are the biggest of their kind and the cattle horns are Jurassic. This is a place to play on the word “big”. My picture, Mankind, had novelty factor because it delivered such an emphatic sense of scale and place. Whilst I was nervous of treading old ground, familiarity is a friend not a foe, that’s why we often use the same talent in our storytelling. I needed to go one step further than I had in 2014, without losing any small individual stories within the image. My sense was that there needed to be even more of a visual overload in the frame and I found it difficult in my preconceptions to escape from the word “panoramic”. The local chiefs and the head of police knew where to take me and my security detail knew how to keep me safe. I would go into largely unchartered land where the Dinka had established a camp of over 10,000 cattle. I have often thought that a photographer in the last eight years would go and try and take their own version of Mankind, but I haven’t seen any. Every week I see monochrome photographs of the big elephants of Kenya, many embracing a ground up approach and then the prints are framed in black wood with a white mount, edition number on left, signature on right. All come with a nice little narrative. Some of this work is excellent, but I think the market may be a little saturated. I am reminded of Warren Buffett’s wonderful prompt, “if you see a bandwagon, you have missed it”. But no work is coming from South Sudan and I think I know why. The simple question is where on earth does a first-time visitor start on the logistics? With East African wildlife, all a photographer needs are a jeep, a guide and some nice camera gear and away they go. Sundowners in their $400 a night camp at 6.30pm and then 1000 photos to download. These men love a beer, a smoke and a honky-tonk girl, who brings out the masculinity that defines them. John Steinbeck - the American literary giant - wrote “I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion.” I get it, and cowboy culture is core to that religion. To try to immerse oneself in Texan culture and not spend time with true cowboys is akin to holidaying in Italy and eating at Burger King...

"I wanted this carefully composed Honky Tonk vignette to have real sense of place; that place being Texas. There are a few hints in the photograph: the Lone Star pool table lighting; the ten working cowboys; the neon guitar on the left and even the air conditioning unit (less common in more northerly cowboy states). Throw in a tall, bad ass women in the foreground and we know we are in Texas. It is the lighting that makes the photograph and that is down to the big barn doors at Arkey’s that are open during the day. It was this ambient light on the far-left corner that allowed me to work with minimal artificial light and that made all the difference. There is also a little bit of a ‘Red Dead Redemption” vibe as I am shooting with a wide-angle lens close to the lead, as often seems to be the perspective in the successful video game series. This allows the depth of Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar saloon to be exploited rather than compressed. I avoid distance compression if at all possible, as a sense of space is often as critical as a sense of place. Bandera, in the Hill Country of Texas, is quintessential cowboy territory and a country music stronghold. "The Brotherhood of Thieves, on the tiny old whaling island of Nantucket, is as good a bar as any we know in America from which to tell old stories - and we know quite a few. The ambient light from the window is powerful enough to remove the need for a gaffer and this is such a help when trying to tell tales with a sense of place. The detail in the dog’s face is all lit from the window and this effect lends a sense of timeless drama. This picture could have been taken 50 or 100 years ago rather than April 2022. Mastiff dogs are among some of the oldest breeds known to humans and were among the first canines to accompany humans on their migrations across the globe. More importantly, for the purpose of this role, their faces have a rather majestic human countenance allowing me to build stories around them. We have worked with many breeds over the years, but for this kind of work, Mastiffs are in a league of their own...
