Tamara F began photographing performers like David Bowie, The Tubes, Patti Smith, and the Ramones at the age of 12 in San Francisco, using her youth as a means to enter spaces where she might have raised more suspicion as an adult. In this collection of photographs, she gathers never-before-seen images of some of the most iconic bands of the late 70s and 80s. Borrowing her junior high school art department’s camera, Tamara captured the iconoclastic spirit of the West Coast, and these photographs reflect the artist’s journey from childhood through adolescence. Tamara F went on to attend the San Francisco Art Institute where she earned a BFA in Photography and a BFA in Graphic Arts (Printmaking).
