1970

About the Item

Gelatin Silver Print 22 x 28 in. Edition of 75 Numbered and signed by Christo Framing included Black frame: 22 3/8 x 28 3/4 x 1 1/8 in. Ugo Mulas is born on August 28, 1928 in Pozzolengo, in the province of Brescia. In 1948 after graduating from a classical lyceum he moves to Milan where he works as a tutor so that he can support himself while studying Law. Between 1951 and 1952 he enrolls in an evening course on nude drawing at Brera Academy and starts spending time at Bar Jamaica, the haunt of intellectuals and artists. After completing his studies he chooses not to get a university degree “because I was afraid I would be forever influenced […] I preferred to risk failing, becoming a misfit, someone without an occupation.” Postwar Milan, the city’s outskirts, Bar Jamaica, and the waiting rooms at the Central Train Station where the homeless find shelter are the locations in Ugo Mulas’s early photos. Neorealism corresponds to the photographer’s ideological and human position. Nonetheless, these first images capture “the small and significant gestures of photography more than of the setting, they are metaphorical of the act and statute of photography rather than realistic and descriptive.” In 1954 he produces his first official reportage at the Venice Biennale: “My official activity as a photographer began with the 1954 Venice Biennale; at the time, I had neither practice, nor any sort of art. I had left Milan with Mario Dondero for no specific reason except for my desire to approach this world in a more participative way.” In Tommaso Trini’s words: “With his first reportage photography at the 1954 Venice Biennale he immediately identified his preferential relationship with art, which he never neglected in spite of the growing and more profitable success that would also allow him to work in the fields of fashion, advertising, and theater; he established the scene of long periods of time spent in that city; indeed it was in Venice in the summer of 1972 that he took his last photos. He was not so much drawn to the art objects as to the characters, the people, the sense of the event. Mulas was the photojournalist who brought to life the actors and settings of the Biennale, portraying them as though they were on a stage.” - Taken from the Ugo Mulas website

Mary Illen, Ft. Worth, TX by John Stryker, Silver Gelatin Print, Photography
By John Stryker
Located in Denton, TX
Mary Illen Ft. Worth, TX by John Stryker is a 10 x 8 inch silver gelatin print. This photograph is signed in ink on print recto and titled in pencil on print verso. This photograph features a cowgirl riding a light colored horse, resting at a river. The horse reaches down to the water for a drink, while the woman looks down lovingly at the horse. John Stryker was born in Rockford, Illinois, September 1, 1883. He is most remembered for his body of photographs he took of the "Olympic of Western sport"*- the Rodeo. During his lifetime he crossed America, working rodeos as an announcer, a producer, promoter and sometimes a rider. He invented the chute that the animals come out of and he developed new ways of photographing action during an event. Dramatic shots were taken from the ground, propping his camera on the toe of his right boot right next to a bucking bronco. Some historians believe that John Stryker was directly responsible for the growth and sophistication of the sport. His negatives are in the collection of the University of Texas at Permian Basin, Odessa. His photographs have been exhibited during his lifetime at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming, and the Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas. His photographs have been published widely including Life, Look, The Cattleman, The Western Horseman, and The Quarter Horse Journal. In 1977, The Rodeo of John Addison Stryker...

In 1969 he set up his own studio and by 1971, he was the official photographer for the British music magazine Disc & Music Echo. His first assignment for them that year was to photograph Mick Jagger in London. From the editorial work for Disc and Music Echo, Sounds and later Smash Hits & Q magazine amongst others, to the 1973 tour with The Rolling Stones that led to a long-standing relationship working with the band, Michael has shot prodigiously including for major record labels including CBS, Warner, Elektra, Polydor, Columbia Records and EMI. Relocating to New York in 1977, it was here that Michael founded the photo agency, Retna. It has been said that Michael photographed everyone from Abba to Zappa … when looking at his archive this is actually true. Now living in East Sussex, recent 2016 exhibitions include “Off The Record” at The Lucy Bell Gallery in Hastings showing images both on and off stage including previously unseen contact sheets; whilst Ono Arte in Bologna, Italy is hosting a David Bowie show. Autumn 2014 saw Michael’s 50 year retrospective at the Getty Gallery in London: “A life in Music, 50 Years On The Road”. Snap Gallery in London’s Piccadilly Arcade regularly have a selection of Michael’s work on show. Michael continues to shoot the artists he most admires – likely to be jazz, classical and world musicians, who have always provided an alternative narrative to his rock music portfolio. “It has been a fantastic ride through an incredible period of music history, which combined my two great loves … music and photography. Little did I appreciate, when my Uncle Alan encouraged my photography back in the 1950s, that this would lead me to photographing nearly all of my heroes … and thrilled to be still finding new ones. A great never ending journey.” Michael Putland About The Who : Few rock & roll bands were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notorious live performances demonstrated: Keith Moon fell over his drum kit while Pete Townshend leaped into the air with his guitar, spinning his right hand in exaggerated windmills. Vocalist Roger Daltrey prowled the stage as bassist John...
