About the Item

"In a damp & dreary pub in Santa Monica, California, a young girl practices her skills on the pool table. Shot on 35mm film. Santa Monica, CA - 2013." -Zack Whitford Limited edition Archival Pigment Print on Archival Canson Platine Fibre Rag paper. Signed and numbered by the artist. Edition size: 25 16" x 20" Please inquire about framing options. About the artist: A gifted young street photographer, who just happens to be the son of Aerosmith’s rhythm guitarist, Brad Whitford, is set loose with the band. The result is a take on rock photography that blows through all the commercial conventions of hype-driven money shots. ~Michael Weinstein, New City Art Zack Whitford is a documentary photographer based in Los Angeles. Before coming to California, he spent his early years in Massachusetts, as well as ‘on the road’ with his father, a member of the rock group Aerosmith.Zack’s career as a photographer began in 2011 when a hobby for the craft quickly transitioned into a full time job. His early work was purely freelance, focusing mainly on commissions and events. Eventually, he made his way into the music business where his work caught the attention of the member’s of Aerosmith and their management. Zack was reintroduced to the road-life but now as the Aerosmith’s official photographer. Artist Statement: "When I was much younger, and training to be a stage actor, my teacher said something once that has always stuck with me. He said: 'As actors, you are investigators of humanity.' I found that to be quite profound and something that rang true with me. Since, I've began my life as a photographer, photographing friends & complete strangers, the parallels between the art of acting and documentary photography have been obvious as both are about being completely in the moment. Whether I am making a portrait of a monk in Bhutan or of an American rock star on the side streets of Istanbul, the one absolute parallel in what I am trying to convey to the viewer is the simple humanity found in one's eyes, body language or facial expression. That unspoken sense of 'Here we are - all in it together." ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Recently, his work can be seen in Rolling Stone, Esquire, The Red Bulletin, New City Art & The Hollywood Reporter.

"I choose to be long of parody, as to exaggerate helps to communicate. My default position is to be bold in any narrative. In this photograph I wanted to fully em- brace the vibe of a honky-tonk bar in Texas, peopled by hard working, hard living cowboys whom David Allen Coe made pivotal to his song writing. These men love a beer, a smoke and a honky-tonk girl, who brings out the masculinity that defines them. John Steinbeck - the American literary giant - wrote “I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion.” I get it, and cowboy culture is core to that religion. To try to immerse oneself in Texan culture and not spend time with true cowboys is akin to holidaying in Italy and eating at Burger King...

"Bandera, Texas is the self-appointed home of the cowboy and a visitor is left in no doubt that this is the beating heart of Marlboro country and Marlboro men. This small town in the Hill Country also boasts a bar - Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar - that is as good a honky-tonk bar to film in that I know of.
