Most likely this is a Sears Roebuck’s mail-order house, style no. 111, also called “The Chelsea”. The Sears Modern Homes catalogue of 1908 lists the cost of this home at $2,135. A few weeks after the order was placed, three boxcars filled with more than thirty thousand items would arrive at the nearest depot. Included were such necessities as paint, nails, sash weights, gutters, crown molding, shingles, coat hooks and one doorbell (in fact, almost everything except for the framing lumber). A seventy-five-page leather bound manual embossed with the owner’s name, gave precise instructions. The company estimated that a man who possessed basic construction skills could build the house, weather permitting, in ninety days.
