"Leggings or Chaps have always been a staple tool for the cowboy. Made of leather, these are made to withstand the brutal conditions that these men and women surround themselves in on a daily basis. Each pair has its own identity woven throughout and compliments the personality of the owner they are worn by. This image was captured in Arizona after photographing a few cowboys working just outside the town of Globe. Small tears and scuff marks filled up almost every inch of these old leggings that had been punctured by years of cacti and mesquite brush. As I set up a white backdrop at the ranch, we took this photo in the late afternoon sun which gave me the perfect contrast I was looking for. The fringe accent on the back of the leggings showcases so much detail and adds character to the giant vintage spurs that this cowboy uses for his boots. The creases in his boots tell a story of a pair that have been used for many years and are barely holding together. Duck tape used along the front toe to keep the sole together highlights just how many stories they have to tell. I call this artwork, "The Old Ways."

Beau Simmons has been a professional photographer since 2009. He grew up just outside Joshua Tree National Park, CA. He made a name for himself at 21 in the fashion photography industry working with clients including Marc Jacobs, 7 For All Mankind, Guess Jeans, and Converse. He was a go-to photographer for such agencies as Elite Models, IMG, and Ford Models. The fashion scene began to grind on Beau. Being a cowboy is in his blood. In this spirit, he decided to pursue his love for the western lifestyle and the wonder of the American landscape. Beau captures his artwork exclusively on film using the lost art of medium and large format film photography. Taking inspiration from masters of film photography like Kurt Marcus and Steven Shore, Beau finds passion in capturing some of the forgotten lifestyles of our time. By telling a story influenced by cowboys and the western culture, his body of work focuses on preserving authentic moments and documenting what might be referred to as a lost era in today’s society. His body of work is a collection of memories captured predominantly throughout North America. His commitment to telling an authentic story also includes working with American veterans and is on full display in his first feature coffee table book, The Twenty-Year War, that he created with two combat veterans, one of whom is his childhood friend. Beau is based in North Carolina but can usually be found traveling the United States, working on various ranches while capturing the western lifestyle.

"Sunlight dances across canyon walls, slowly working its way across the valley. Spurs sing in the quiet morning breeze as they jingle along with the rhythm of horse hooves trotting across the land. Cows weave in and out of Mesquite as they march on. The distant sound of cowboys whistling and hollering out while gathering the herd draws closer with every passing minute. Before long, an orchestra of bellows fills the air as the herd is sorted into the pens. The morning is no longer still. Soon after we are met with a beautiful dance composed of cowboys dragging, branding, castrating, and vaccinating calves. The smell of burnt hair fills your nostrils. Dust finds its way into our lungs. Blood mixes in with dirt, completely saturating our boots. High noon brings sweat-soaked hats while the sun burns our skin. There is no shade out here to find rest. The day continues until hundreds of calves have been worked and we're provided with lunch.
