About the Item

All Around the Rock Edition of 10 - 40 x 40 cm. Digital C-Print based on a on a 600 Polaroid. Signed on back and certificate. Not mounted. All around the Rock (Shot 2019 on SX70 film) Taken from the Red Shoes series it is influenced by Russ Myers and explores the adventures of the young women with her red shoes that have magical powers. Clare Marie Bailey Works and Lives: UK Clare Marie Bailey is a UK based photographer and was born and grew up on the Island of Anglesey in Wales. Clare became interested in world cinema which would later become an enduring influence on her photographic work. Her passion for Polaroid and instant film photography began when she became mesmerised and fell deeply in love with its dynamic and at times mercurial and almost random character; its ability to give an almost perfect imperfection. Clare’s work, centred on self-portraits, is heavily influenced by the Cinema, Magical Iconography, Dreams, and the Counterculture of the 1960 s and B-Movies. Clare uses film to work towards creating an alternative and parallel world where she can co-exist with the ‘real’ world and is fascinated with the idea of ‘doubles’ and ‘doppelgangers’ and the concept of reinvention. Clare believes all art is a form of magic and using memory, emotion and imagination to manipulate materials and create imagery is a form of alchemy. Her work has been exhibited in many group shows and most recently was exhibited as part of Image Nations ‘Instant Art Paris’ the International Polaroid Exhibition in Galerie Joseph Turenne, Paris. Currently working on a new body of work, Clare has also been creating film shorts to accompany her still work. Clare is a group member of the 12:12 project for 2019 that brings together international Polaroid Artists who shoot a different theme for each month throughout the year.

ABOUT: Victoria Goldman’s twenty-year-long fascination with Tarot has created a series of photographs based on the imagery and the mythology behind the ancient Tarot cards. Each image in the collection is inspired by and named after one of the 22 major archetypes of the Tarot. While photographing and teaching yoga and meditation in India, Hawaii, and throughout Europe, Goldman always made sure to carry a Tarot deck in her backpack. She views Tarot as a tool for personal elevation, helping her direct her focus and better understand her psyche. The collection’s soft focus and figurative emphasis is reminiscent of the work of Francesca Woodman or Julia Margaret Cameron, whom Goldman cites as personal artistic inspirations. The concept behind the exhibition was long thought-out; while some pieces date as recently as two months prior to the exhibition opening, others date as far back as 1999 or 2000. Shot primarily with vintage Polaroid and film with a twin lens Rolleiflex camera, the dark, moody, mythological images recall a classical tone that mirrors the timelessness of the cards themselves. The invitational image, entitled “Wheel of Fortune”, depicts a young woman in a glittering gown, her backside facing the viewer and her body positioned to spin a large carnival wheel hidden in the darkness of the photograph. The high-contrast nature of the image abstracts the gown, morphing the glitter on the dress into drops of light that shine through the dark air. The slender young woman in “Fortune” can be found in several of the collection’s photographs, depicting not just Lady Luck, as in the invitational image, but also the Emperor, the Devil...

Land & Sea VII (A)
By Colleen Fitzgerald
Located in Sante Fe, NM
Edition of 5 Colleen Fitzgerald's series, "Stamina," provides new approaches to conventional subjects by utilizing the materials and tools of photography in non-traditional ways. A unique physical process combines aspects of sculpture and photography, subverting the idealized two-dimensional photograph and providing a new entry point to the enduring photographic subjects of natural landscapes, seascapes, and more. To create the photographs, unexposed large sheets of positive film are cut and bent into three dimensional shapes before being exposed inside a camera outfitted with a custom film holder that accepts the film as a three-dimensional object instead of as a standard, flat sheet. The results on the shaped film can...
