Gered Mankowitz
Rolling Stones Masons Yard, 1965

1965

About the Item

British rock band The Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Brian Jones) photographed at Mason’s Yard studio in London, 1965. Gered recalls: “This image became my first cover for the band, and was the fulfilment of a dream for me at the age of 18. The original negative for this image was lost years ago, probably stolen from my studio where security was lax to say the least, but it was recently returned to me, having been found in an old lock-up in West London. After careful restoration I am now able to produce these beautiful prints. One of these prints is now part of the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery in London.” At the age of 15, Gered Mankowitz left school and embarked upon what would become a highly successful photography career, meeting and shooting some of the most iconic actors, personalities, and musicians of the 20th century. The brilliant and beloved late actor and comedian Peter Sellers encouraged Mankowitz to pursue photography. After cutting his teeth as an apprentice in the studios of some of London’s top photographers and taking on early commissions for fashion companies, Mankowitz set up his own studio and soon found himself where he belonged: the music industry. His sitters have included Marianne Faithfull, Jimi Hendrix, Duran Duran, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones, who he met and toured with at the beginning of their rise to super-stardom. In addition to teaching, mounting exhibitions, and working for magazines and other clients, Mankowitz continues to document musicians. Other sizes available: 16"x20", 20"x24", 30"x40"

British rock star Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. Photographed in his home called Redlands in West Wittering in West Sussex. Gered Mankowitz on the shoot: "By 1966, The Stones' position as rock gods was established. They were making serious money and splashing out on new homes and cars. I had an enjoyable day down there with him. It was a high degree of refurbishing chaos! Keith was in a Lord of the Manor frame of mind with a horse and paddock and a small rowboat on the moat and his collection of antique weapons...

This painting was acquired directly from the artist and has been held in a private collection since. Purvis Young Over a span of nearly five decades, the self- taught liberty city born artist, Purvis Young created thousands of paintings on found plywood, discarded cloth, cast-off furniture, and other urban debris, hanging them on the walls of a boarded up building along NW 14th street at 2nd Ave in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood, a stretch known as Good Bread Alley. Young's images add up to an epic fantastical representation of the history of Overtown-- from the demolition of black owned...
