About the Item
"Other Possible Forests unfolds a horizon of vital potentialities, where listening serves as a conduit for exploring the natural world, immersing us in its molecular memory and transposing the sounds and language of the Colombian jungle into the urban realm. Following the course of the Guaviare River to Cerro Azul in the San José del Guaviare region, María José Arjona meticulously gathers the sonic heritage of this pivotal and liminal territory. This act of listening emerges as a political gesture, positing the body as a site of resonance and a nexus between disparate worlds. The photographs emerge as one of the multifaceted layers constituting the totality of the project, forging a nuanced relationship between the creation of visual imagery and the soundscapes that inherently envelop them. Central to these compositions, the copper cone invites the viewer to engage in an act of listening that transcends visual perception. This perfor-imaginative exercise hints at the emergence of another forest beyond the perceptible, an affective space shared by beings that co-vibrate with the planet. In this context, distinctions
between the artist's corporeal presence, what we conventionally classify as nature, and the observer become increasingly porous; dissolution manifests as the sonic dimensio permeates the visual horizon, submerging anthropocentric narratives and situating us within a less predictable yet profoundly affective realm.
María José Arojona is a contemporary artist dedicated to the performing arts. In her works she explores themes such as identity, the body, human relationships and the relationship between the body and the mind.

Maria José Arjona
Maria José Arjona was born in Bogota, Colombia, in 1973. Currently living and working between New York and Bogota, Arjona has developed a career fully focused on performance with an emphasis on long durational practices to address process, memory and power. From 2008–10, Arjona started to introduce the idea of a cycle as an archive of gestures, where to process different states of the body within political and social structures of power. Arjona’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout Europe, South America, Asia and the US. Her pieces have been reviewed in publications such as Art In America, The New York Times, The Guardian (UK), Whitewall Magazine, Art Nexus International, Arte Al Dia, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Mag Magazine, Wynwood Magazine, El Tiempo, El Espectador, Corriere Della Sera, Revista Arcadia, Revista Diners and many others. Arjona participated as a re-performer of the iconic pieces of Marina Abramovic at her retrospective “THE ARTIST IS PRESENT” in MOMA, New York, in 2010 and was also involved in the workshop “Cleaning The House” given by Abramovic herself.

"Four years ago I wrecked my sailboat and was selfmedicating with vodka at a Russian restaurant when I suddenly noticed a cute girl hanging from the ceiling right above my glass. She was not only beautiful, she was a dancer too, and she agreed to model for me underwater.
Two days later, if you stopped by my pool you’d see a fully dressed ballerina with her hands underwater and me wriggling at the bottom around her dance e shoes. I kept asking her to tie and untie her pointe hypnotized by the small hands entwined in ribbons and light. I took quite a few pictures that day. This one is my favorite." Alex Sher
