About the Item

From Richard Heeps 2016 series The Streets of Hong Kong. ''The idea for the series was how I could represent the intrinsic nature of Hong Kong, the idea of layers and light. Through most of the work there is a linear pattern alongside a raw distressed quality with a pop of Pop Art. Captured at the Star Ferry Terminal, the reflective surface makes the character appear to float. The word 'Control' is an interesting one to have come away with as it is a great reflection of Hong Kong, politically society is very controlled but without it this great number of people would not function. Interestingly 'Control' was the 2011 Chinese character of the year. I was blind to the meaning of all the characters I photographed, it was purely aesthetic, coming away and learning about their meaning has taken the project further.'' Richard Heeps This artwork is a limited edition of 25, gloss photographic print, dry-mounted to aluminium, presented in a museum board white window mount and a choice of black or white box frame. It is signed and numbered on reverse accompanied certificate of authenticity. This artwork can be purchased in bespoke sizes, just get in touch. Be sure to look at his other artworks listed on 1stDibs as they are great paired for interior design projects. Richard Heeps’ seductive, highly saturated colours and sophisticated pictorial structures demonstrate a true love and empathy for his subject matter – be it cool, descriptive interiors, still life, portrait or landscape. His distinctive style pushes the limits of lens-based photography without the need for digital manipulation. He runs his own darkrooms in Cambridge (UK) where he hand prints his colour photography. His work has been exhibited in Museums and Public Galleries around England, and he has participated in Art Fairs around the world, and his work is now part of many international collections.

Edition of 9, plus 2 AP; Ed. no. 4/9 Michael Wolf was born in 1954 in Munich, Germany. He worked and lived in Paris and Hong Kong where he died in April 2019. The focus of Michael Wolf’s work is life in mega-cities. His projects document both the architecture and the vernacular culture of metropolises. Born in Munich, Wolf grew up in Canada, Europe, and the United States, studying at UC Berkeley and at the Folkwang School with Otto Steinert in Essen, Germany. He moved to Hong Kong in 1994, where he worked for eight years as a contract photographer for Stern magazine. Since 2003, Wolf has been focusing on his own projects, publishing over thirty books of his work. His work is held in many permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art in California, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, and M+ in Hong Kong. back door: The dark back alleys that crisscross the city are home to objects that, at first glance, seem to be discarded—the random detritus of the man-made world. Under the scrutiny of Michael Wolf's photographic eye, these objects become fascinating installation pieces, while the abstract patterns of the buildings reveal the beauty and order that underlie the apparent chaos of the city. Thought-provoking texts by Kenneth Baker and Douglas Young explore the choices that people make of lifestyle, form, function, identity, and design, as well as the notion of Hong Kong as a brand. – Art, Cityscape, Architecture, City, Michael Wolf, Street Photography, Colour Photography, Hong Kong, Pink Blanket...
