Emily Pethick writes for Artforum: “‘Deaf Dude,’ 2003, comprises seventeen rephotographed images from an ’80s porn magazine, showing a cute, supposedly deaf model demonstrating sexually explicit sign language. Relaying terms like ‘blow job,’ ‘masturbation,’ ‘group sex,’ and ‘climax’ in simple hand gestures, the model speaks for the lack of a subversive radical voice from the gay community in this era of mainstream acceptance.”
