About the Item

This artwork titled "Che (Che Guevara cutting cane) 1962 (printed later) is a gelatin silver print by noted Cuban artist Ernesto Fernandez Nogueras, b.1939. It is signed, titled and dated at the lower margin. The photograph size is 10 x 6.5 inches, framed size is 17.85 x 15.85 inches. Custom framed in a black frame, with white matting. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Ernesto Fernandez trained under the tutelage of several established photographers during the 1950s in Havana. He is one of the four great photographers of the Revolutionary period of Cuba. As a young man he witnessed both the excesses of Havana as a “playground” of the USA, and the poverty that produced the hotbed of revolutionary thought and action. He was in the Cuban capital as the revolution reached its climax, and his pictures document a time of great hope. They are celebrations of youth’s ability to bring about change and to reinvent a new world. Alongside Korda, Salas and Corrales, Fernandez documented the heady days of the Triumph of the Revolution and continued to photograph Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and other leading lights of the new system, including some wonderfully intimate studies of Alicia Alonso, Cuba’s greatest ballerina. After Fidel Castro’s regime was installed in 1959 he worked for the newspaper Revolucion and during his time as a journalist covered conflicts including the Bay of Pigs invasion and wars in Angola and Nicaragua. He was also a founding member of Cuba’s Union of Artists and Writers in 1961 (UNEAC). Ernesto Fernandez continues to photograph Cuba and to teach a new generation of artists. He is only the second photographer ever to be awarded Cuba’s National Prize for the Visual Arts (2011). Studies He began his photography studies from 1952 to 1958 with photographers Carlos Fernández, Generoso Funcasta, Raúl Vales, and José Agraz. He also studied journalism at the University of Havana from 1975 to 1979. He is honored to be a member of the International Journalism Organization (IJO) and the Latin American Federation of Journalists (FELAP). Professional activity He began his career in the art world as an assistant draftsman for Carteles Magazine from 1952 to 1956. He also worked as: • 1955-1958: Lighting Engineer and Set Designer. Prometeo Theater, Havana. • 1956-1958: Designer, Illustrator, and Photographer. Carteles Magazine, Havana. • 1958-1964: Photographer. Critic's opinions His epic images have had a great impact, most of them captured during missions as a war correspondent in Venezuela (1959), Playa Girón (1961), Angola (1981-83) and Nicaragua (1983). Critics have praised his work as a visual repertoire that breaks down the boundaries between photojournalism and photo essay.
