About the Item

"OPTASIA 02" Abstract Photography 39" x 39" inch Edition 3/5 by Giuliano Bekor OPTASIA 02 39" x 39" inch Edition 3/5 Archival pigment print. Not framed. Ships in tube. OPTASIA 02 Inspired by a Corinthian mosaic floor from a Roman villa decorated with a medal, bearing the head of Dionysos, the god of wine, theatre and religious ecstasy, 2nd century AD. OPTASIA series A palimpsest of forms and emotions OPTASIA is the new body of work by Giuliano Bekor, the internationally acclaimed photographer, perpetually in love with Greece and Greek culture. On show for the first time, the collection is part of the Life Art Festival 2018 in Greece and an ideal opportunity for the photographer to create artworks inspired by emblematic ancient treasures: Cycladic art, Black-figured and Geometric amphorae, Classical sculpture and Hellenistic mosaics. Los Angeles and New York based, Giuliano Bekor, a veteran in fashion and celebrity photography, has long been passionate with the same beauty that inspired Ancient Greek art: that of the human figure. In his artistic works, he creates large-scale photographs where he envelops his models in a second skin made of art inspired forms, which go beyond the aesthetics of the image by challenging omnipresent issues such as the masculine and the heroic. The figures – masterly composed, without any digital manipulation, and dramati- cally lit against dark backgrounds - are hence given a highly painterly quality. In OPTASIA, the naked female body becomes the canvas on which the artist creates his own idiosyncratic archeology: a palimpsest of forms and emotions, at times dark and other times luminous, like human history and life itself. The outcome of pairing Ancient Greek motifs with the naked bodies, especially through the prism of a crosscultural body adornment tradition, is a transcend- ing vision of imaginary goddesses. OPTASIA is indeed a beautiful vision. ABOUT THE ARTIST Internationally recognized photographer, Giuliano Bekor, holds a portfolio that includes work from the realms of fashion, beauty, celebrity, advertising, and fine art. Giuliano’s photography has been featured in top publications around the globe, and his client list includes an endless file of beauty industry leaders, advertising agencies, celebrities, producers, and artists. With 30 years in the industry, Giuliano has perfected his craft to an exceptional level of expertise. Composed of light, color, space and form, Giuliano brings ideas conceptualized in his own imagination into reality throughout his work. Currently living between New York and Los Angeles, Giuliano is often on the move traveling for work and inspiration. Always the restless visionary, he ceases to continually express his fresh and nuanced style. For Giuliano Bekor, a photograph is an image that comes into being consciously, composed of light, color, space and form. Like a painter, he sketches, refining ideas through pen and pencil well before the shutter clicks. A camera is strictly a means to an end, a way of making a palpable visual record of an idea that gestates in his mind, gains shape by his hand, and resolves through his eye as it peers through the lens. His subject is the human body, almost always nude. These images delve into the splendor of the body - how it can express the inner meaning of who we are. Limbs, torsos, muscles and bones are exposed as though carved out of a supple, glowing stone that flexes and twists. Many of these photographs feature subjects posed with the eyes obscured, the face covered. If we look closely, Bekor says, we can see that the body is as much a window into the soul as the eyes. This is a gallery of the soul etched into the forms we assume in the physical world. Through exaggerated contrast between light and dark, smooth and textured, vaporous and tactile, Giuliano deliberately filters the extraneous. The camera captures the image, but for Bekor each exposure is a transformation - of himself, his subjects, and us. He is digging into uneasy turf, fraught with tension: masculine/feminine, heroic/cowardly, shameless/shameful, eternal/fleeting. The intensity of detail, the fiercely exquisite perfection of the bodies themselves, the unflinching, scrupulous engagement of the lens, negates all pretense of politeness. Confronted, we are summoned to look. So we must. And we do. And we experience the beautiful human forms we inhabit and the silent, eloquent language they speak.

Size 1: 86 x 59 inches Size 2: 65 x 43 inches Size 3: 45 x 30 inches A meeting between a painter, a model and the photographer… Extensive, both in time and scope; ThePainters Project is an ongoing collection of collaborations with painters to whom Eric offers as a canvas some of the very best models he has enjoyed working with during his career. For a number of these artists the project offers them a step in the dark, an escape into unknown territory. They must settle into a new environment with unfamiliar light, unusual shadows and highlights and a canvas that is not only three dimensional but alive, breathing and sentient. Movements and poses influence their strokes, they must discover, adapt and ultimately tame this canvas with their brush. Together, the body and the art become one to achieve the sublime. To blend the often distinct viewpoints of different disciplines and work together; to mix various instruments, tools and angles is an uncommon, yet extremely rewarding and exciting approach, but also contrary to the eternal solitude of the artist, a commonly echoed mantra in the art sphere. This unorthodox partnership gives birth to wonderful and often surprising creations. Magic succeeds when the ephemeral and volatile nature of paint on the human skin is forever captured through the lens and immortalised onto the image. More than hundred meetings have already taken place with artists from the UK, Uruguay, Mauritius, Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, the US, China, Venezuela, Russia and many other countries all across the globe. The electric blue lines and shapes were painted along the woman's curves and demonstrated the endless possibilities of a person's body.
